Here tonight with life and limbs intact after rolling an excavator greasy side up into the trench yesterday. Even though I was tempted not to be bothered with the seat belt being how unhandy the Bobcat design is. I was reaching in from the side, cleaning out last weeks new 5 foot deep water service trench going back to the shed/barn. The pipe failed to be delivered last week and the walls were collapsing in from 4+ inches of rain since it was dug. The spot that let go looked pretty good compared to other spots previously cleaned out too. It was a strange feeling knowing she was starting to go and swinging the boom for stability was too late. Made it side roll rather than a face plant however. THERE IS NO D*MMED WAY YOU OR ANYONE CAN JUMP CLEAR OR HOLD YOURSELF IN THE SEAT during a roll. Wear the seat belt. The manufacture didn't spend the money to put it there without a reason. Much to my amazent the engine was still running without the oil pressure idiot light coming on? Shut the engine off, got another backhoe tractor, opened up the side of the trench into a ramp and fished her out. Lots of Bruce County clay stuck to it but back digging within three hours. That included getting the backhoe tractor unstuck as well. Put a leash on the Bobcat for the rest of the job. Tied off and tightened a heavy chain to a large tractor.

I "almost" always use my seat belt on my roll bar equipped tractors. I ALWAYS use it, if i'm useing the loader! On my crawler, i ALWAYS use the seat belt!!

My friend ended up in his peat bog with his excavator!! He was upset, and went to the house to get his D6. Guess what?? Yes, the 6 ended up in the peat bog too!! SO, he goes to the house to get his 450!! Guess what??? YES, soon the 450 was in the peat bog!!!

The madder he got, the more mistakes he made!!!! There's a good lesson in there!!!

The guy in the skidder was sure happy he had a good strong cab over his head!!!

Robert

Thank God for the new safety equipment ROPS and seat belts do work. Lost a good freind of mine when we were kids. He rolled a 4020 while packing ensilage. I was luckier I rolled a Allis D15 w/loader and walked away. All I remember is bailing over the down hill side and rolling as fast as I could and all I could see was that tractor coming at me.

Wow! That's absolutely amazing! Rolled over, and you say the oil pressure held. No idiot-light came on and the engine just idled... they must be building them for areobatic maneuvers! Can a factory sponsored excavator demonstration team be far behind? ;)

I rolled a Case skid steer on it's side a few years ago and the engine stayed running and light never came on either. Picked it up with a bigger loader and chain, led the fluids settle a bit and started right off loading again.

Is it possible that the oil sensor isn't a pressure type sensor and being upset actually covered the probe in oil making it think it had oil? Or maybe my idiot light just didn't work...

Anyways, I agree the seatbelt is there for a reason, it sure held me in the ROPS while I tipped.

Good to hear you were o.k. too.

Pressure type sender. Oil light's on before starting and goes off 1-2 seconds after starting. Engine was low at the back. Must have splashing enough oil into the sump pickup to maintain pressure. Even started it up for a minute to swing the boom and tip it some to drag it out easier. Must have shook the sludge off the hydraulic sump screen. All boom motions etc where faster afterwards.

Cool!

Glad you were okay (and the machine too!). It sure is a sick feeling when you start going over and know you can't stop it.

Now I always wondered why those bits of webbing with the funny steel pieces on their ends were there.
And they ackshully do something too, huh?

Glad to hear you're okay and somewhat wiser too. Too many who get into those situations don't live long enough to get the wiser bit.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
