MF35 Conversion From Dynamo To Alterator

Need help. I am at the good end of 2 year MF35 refrubishment project. In my wisdom and for all the right reasons I decided to convert from the old dynamo to an altenator. The altenator I have used is one from a VW golf. It has a 2 wire connection, 1 to the battery and one for the ignition light (idiot light). My problem is that I have to rev the engine to get the idiot light to go out and consequently start charging the battery. Is there any way I can get around this with the altenator that I have or do I need to go to an altenator with sens and exite terminals. Any help / comment would be much appreciated.

I am not familiar with the VW alternator, but have had this same problem with other brands which use power from the idiot light to excite the alternator. You may get it to excite at lower rpm if you increase the wattage of the idiot light. The cleanest way is if the light socket has room for a larger bulb. Another method used by GM in cars for years was to install a hidden idiot light wired in parallel with the existing light to double the exciter current. I had this problem with an Oliver 1900 with a 10SI Delco conversion. It needed almost 2000 rpm to excite the alternator with the original light. I was able to fit a larger bulb to the light which moved the excitation rpm below 1000 rpm.
You can see if this will work by connecting a 12V test light in parallel with the existing light to see if it helps.

Hi Jon,

Many many thanks, your suggestion worked !
The higher wattage bulb done the trick.

I am very gratefull to you for taking the trouble to respond. It is very pleasing to have things working the way they should.

Kindest Regards
Francis

agree with Red Dave either speed the alternator up or speed the tractor up. I have the same problem on my 1650 have to rev up to 1500 to start charging then can slow back to 1000 where it will charge good. however you probably will be happier with a smaller pulley on alternator or larger pulley on engine driving it
good luck

The VW engine will turn at 5000 RPM where the tractor runs at maybe 2000 RPM or so. The alternator probably isn't turning nearly fast enough. You could try putting a smaller pulley on the alternator, as small as you can get.
Either that or get into the habit of reving the motor whenever you start it.
