I've sold several thousand dollars worth of items on e-bay, and never had an overcharging problem. I've had a handfull of other problems, but not that. In fact, as a seller, I've had very little problem and the fees are low.

Every auction has fees even if it does not sell. E-bay seems in line.
If you take a cow to the local auction and do not get your price you PO it or buy it your self and pay a fee based on the high bid for the service of listing.
A reserve price is just like bidding that amount yourself.

Where they get you is reserve price fees,It cost
me $123 to list a 25000 tractor.I've noticed
lately that some people don't use a reserve
price, they just end the auction before it sells
if it doesn't reach their reserve.

Or they set the starting bid at what they would have reserved it at.

I recently listed three tractors in seperate ads hoping to sell one of them. I sold all three and I believe the fees totaled about $128. not bad. I did list a car a little while back and never got a bid. I believe they charge a $40 fee even if it doesn't sell plus a percentage if it does sell, which is much higher than other items such as tractors, parts, etc.

I sell a few things on ebay myself, I have fairly decent results doing it, the fees are not that bad, but are not that great either. I have a New Idea 310 picker, and a New Idea 324 2 row wide sheller unit that I am going to put on there if this guy doesn't take them, and I think that they will do ok on there from what I have seen.

If you take your stuff to an auction and set a minimum price and it dosen't sell, you still pay a commission. Larry

The only problem I ever had was when I listed an old truck on e-bay. I never even got a bid on the truck, but still had to pay the fee for listing it.

If I put a truck in my local paper for a week it costs me about that whether or not I even get a phone call. Compare the coverage you get on ebay (worldwide) to your local daily newspaper.

I might suggest respectfully that if you did not receive any bids, your minimum was too high or your photos were not clear enough or didn't show enough detail to entice someone to bid hard earned money.

I've sold everything from yard sale trinkets, to an Audi A4. The key, I find, is in good pictures and a clear detailed description.

The commission charged by ebay on the stuff I sell isn't near as big as the commission I got charged at the equipment auction last week when I sold a scraper blade.

The biggest hindrance to selling big ticket items on ebay is transportation. I can sell a CD and ship it in a padded envelope for $2. How do you get a tractor or truck from Utah to Maryland? It kind of cuts down on the number of people willing to bid. And it reduces the amount a potential buyer is willing to bid, figuring he needs to save some money out for shipping. Still, I sold my old '68 Chev pickup to a guy in Houston and got more money than I ever planned to and the buyer was happy to buy a plane ticket to SLC and drive it home.

For what you get, I think ebay is very reasonable. You get nationwide (and if you choose worldwide coverage) of your item. I have sold quite a bit of stuff on ebay and as far away as New York. A local newspaper ad wouldn't afford this opportunity.

I think ebay is a real bargain.

Just my opinion.

Dan

Alvin,

Three years ago, I sold an old antique guitar for $3800. They charged me $29 or so.

I didn't think that was too bad.

This is the best thing eBay is good for...selling the unusual for top dollar. Something that most of us could never achieve by ourselves, (The third item I listed on eBay for $75 ended up selling for over $10K) and for what they charge, it's a real bargain!
