Heard on the radio today that our Trusty Government has doubled the death benefit for soldiers killed in Iraq.the benefit has been increased to a RIP-ROARING $12000.00 Just slightly more than a person could earn on minimum wage for a year.My calculations seem to show that 120 KIA are only worth 3 twin tower victims. If I were to advise a young person about careers,it sure wouldnt be the army.

Truth and half truth!!!!! ! If you say something you need to tell the whole story.
1) While this small amount is true for death benifit this is what the govement pays for. You are offered up to 250K through pay roll deduction.
2) If you have a spouse and children they also get a monthly check.
3) If you have a service disabilty you get a monthly check from the VA.
4) If you get more than 30% disabilty you get full milatary benifits. health, comussary ect.
5) your check for disabilty can be reduced dollar for dollar but only for other goverment benifits such as retirment; not private sector wages.
6) Wages are to low but with BAQ ect it adds up.

I did not post right away to check my facts with my son and daughter in law both in the MARINES. My son is getting out as soon as the paper work is done with 35% service related disabily and has just went to all discharge classes with up to date info and this is the way he explained it to me.
As stated before I do not think anyone takes a job for the death benifits.

When you're only looking out for yourself, things like that bother you. I suspect if you weren't outraged about that, something else would soon come along. How about directing your wrath at the evil doers in the world and let the young folks in this country learn the value of sacrificing and giving of yourself to a worthy cause rather than just living a "What's in it for me?" existence.

That amount is not accurate. I Just retired from the USAF after 26 years October 2002 and my death benefit was 200K. They upped it last in 1999 to that from 120K.

Is that why people join the military-the death benefit? I'd bet $500,000 isn't enough to cover death. What exactly would be a good amount? That certainly isn't why I joined. Our military is here for one reason, and it isn't to collect death benefits. The military is the first suggestion I would make to all able bodied individuals who have what it takes.

While I probably wouldn't have gone into the service if the draft weren't blowing me that way I have realized that it was good for me. I got to mature a bit, saved enough money to buy my place. Learned a bit. Saw some of the world. It was not all pleasent and I wanted to be out most of the time I was in, but it was good for me. It is my opinion that ALL should go into the service upon leaving school, high school or colege. It should be the law. It would be good for the country.

By the way, I was in the navy from 69 to 71, was an Engineman, spent a year in Guantanamo Bay, and two and a half on a small tanker that went form the western pacafic to the east coast to the mederterainian.

It makes you sick to know that our money goes to rebuild bull$hit countries like Afganistan and Iraq but we cant take care of our Veterans and our own cites and infrastrucure. What the $%#@ is wrong with this picture. I really dont care one $#%# bit about those middle east countries. and if anybody can explain it to me why our money goes to the middle east please explain it to me. I agree with blowing em up and killing terrorists but enough already. It is kinda of like the aids problem, everybody says it is a health problem---I dont think so I think it is a Moral problem. Just venting steam.

When I was in if you died your family would get $20,000 and maybe if you had kids they could go to school cheaper. But if you think thats bad, a disabled Vet that get disably pay can't make a dolloar with out it being taken away from his V.A. check

When I was in the Army (89-97), I had a serviceman's life ins. policy. I think it cost me $8/mo. for $200,000 coverage. Pretty reasonable I think.

The real problem with the military is the pay that these men and women receive - it's dang tough to live on what they get paid. They deserve every penny they get and need our support.

And to all my fellow veterans - have a happy Veterans Day next Tuesday!!!

I think what everyone is missing is that the military gives you a place to sleep, medical, dental, a cloting allowance, food, and other benefits. If you choose to have a car, an apartment or house off base, well then that is up to you. If you go in and take advantage of what they offer a person can live and do OK. And remember that there is no draft, nobody is making anyone be in the service anymore. People don't need to join if they think they are not going to be paid enough. Now don't get me wrong, I was in, know what is like to be away, give up two to four years of your life and all that. And all who are in have my respect and thanks. But they choose to join up.

When I was in they didn't offer any thing like that (1974-1980) just the $20,000 for the family if you died. And a Vet on diably rated at 70% only gets $1178 a month and if he works for every dollor he makes he loose a dollar from his V.A. pay

I see the pay scale has gone up over the years since I was in. In 1970 I started out bringing home around $98.00 a month and when I got out 3 years later with a family of 3 and living allowance I was bringing home around $580.00 a month as a E-4 pay scale. Now you start out at $1,064.00 and a E-4 gets $1,665.00 a month. Of course in Vietnam they gave me $60.00 more a month for hostile fire pay and tax free too!!! Mark H.
