Military Surplus questions

Just wanted to further the previous topic on today's tractors with two question threads:

In terms of parts availability and reliability, what is better - deuce and a half or the five ton 6x6 machines? Which is better to work with? What years make sense?

Who makes Whistler turbo Diesels? Are they any good and are parts readily available?

They just seem like good questions given the price of new tractors.

What do you guys think?

With 25 years military maintenance experience: The 5 ton 800 series, powered by the 250 cummins, with 5 speed is the best & most reliable truck. Once you get it maintained right, it is bulletproof and will haul any load you put on it.
In my view something that doesn't break is the best.

I spent 8 years in the Army working on these trucks, and currently own 4... You can get most any part for them, but they can be pricey. Which truck you want depend on your needs, these are what the military calls "tactical trucks". They are rated based on what they will carry over very rough terrain and were designed to operate on very poor roads or no roads at all. They are famously underpowered for highway use, but go off-road and into low range in the transfer case and they are different animals. The "deuce and a half" is rated at 5,000 lbs off-road, 10,000 lbs on road, and will not tolerate much more without damage while the 5 ton will carry all you can put on it. The multi-fuel engine was manufactured by White, or Hercules or one of their successors. Please note that as the military phased out gasoline equipment, most of these engines lost their multifuel capabilities and should not be run on gasoline. Sorry for being long winded, if I can help you send me an e-mail.

Do you know how to increase the fuel output to give the white multifuel engine more power. I have a 1983 am general 6x6 and need more power.

Depends on what you are doing with one. A 2 1/2 ton is easier to turn and get around with but won't have as much power or carry as much load. We have two 5 tons for fire trucks and they can carry the water & equipment load we need but are still lacking power and speed. They won't turn on dime but will go just about anywhere over rough terrain which will tear up most normal trucks. They also made some 10 ton wreckers and tractor-semis but most of these have the larger tires and are really hard to get around with and very slow on the road. Many of the 10 tons were equipped with larger engines though like the 400 big cam Cummins and some are Macks or International. You can find a lot of links to look at here:
