Ok, but one thing leads to another, next thing they will hunt and run their coon dogs on your property, and then ride their machines during the growing season , smashing down your crops, and invite friends to do the same....We got new neighbors and they rode on our farm ,,i called the sheriff two times before they stopped , then they rode them (3) on the road! One thing is for sure they don't belong in my neighborhood, they bought the house and barn from the farmers widow !and they ain't farmers!!!

I had a friend get sued a few months ago he had a rotary hoe sitting out behind a TW15Ford becuase some ATVers took a rifle and decoed the radiator. They were cutting donuts later that night without headlights and ran into the corner of it. He counter sued and won. He had a neighbor that was with the EPA and he showed him what they were doing to his erosion control berms by the creek. Well after EPA got done and put the vaseline up the kids had to sell the 4 wheelers. I know about 12 respctful ATVers and alot more that arent. What gets me is the pck of kids that have them here unsupervised. Wehn I was 12 I had a dune buggy and an old AC B to ide by myself but it stayed in the woods and field not goin down the wrong side of the road over a hill. About six months ago I cleaned up a truckload of steel that was goin down the road and some kids decided to beat the truck. TO avoid them he ditched it and spent 2months in the hospital revering from injuries. THe 2 kids were 12 and 13.

Around here, farmers used to put water in the gas barrel. It wouldn't hurt anything mechanically but it would sure agrivate the thief. I know you would never shoot anybody, but if you did, for the rest of your life you would have to live with the guilt from shooting someone's child. Think about it.

Just a quick question here: how many antique tractor owners also own an ATV (or ATV's)? I have one, my son has two and all the neighbors have at least one; no problems around here because everyone uses them reponsibily.

We have a vacant farm that we keep our tractors and haying equipment at. We have the same problem with unwanted vistors prying the locks off sheds, ATVs, etc. Anything that has gas in it gets drained dry. I'm going to use a old fuel tank on a stand, and put about 25 gallons of gas spiked with something that hopefully will teach a leason to whoever is doing it. I'll put a flimsly padlock on the tank, so there will be no question as to their intentions. Question...what is the best "additive" to add to gasoline that will disable a engine for good? It should be something that cannot be detected by smell.

Moth Balls...Can't really smell them in gasoline, and will raise the combustion temperature of the vehicle running it to a point that the pistons will melt to the cylinder walls. Figure about 3 maybe 4 to every 10 gallons of gasoline, More than that will plug the fuel filter.

One good way would be to stuff a couple of kleenex up the nozzle-they will instantly plug a fuel filter!

Father-in-law had diesel put in one of his tanks that he had been using for gasoline. Next morning there was a stalled car just down the road. They had a terrible time getting it going. Dad just stood there and chuckled!

Use sewage from an RV holding tank then pour a few gallons of gasoline over it.

That will be the last tank they will use a siphon hose to steal gasoline from.

maybe some sand in the bottom of the tank and make sure the pump takes from the bottom so it will suck up some of that sand. If their engine doen't have a fuel filer to plug, it will ruin their engine.

One thing I learned that stops tresspassers is FLAT TIRES. Buy an old harrow and set it in the gateway turned upside down. Nothing like a few destroyed tires to discourage people. Another is to set a honey bee hive up near the gateway. Swinging gates with chains and locks help (until they decide to pack bolt cutters but more likely they won't own one). Until you have someone living there you will be stuck with people assuming its OK to wonder around an abandoned farm site. Forget about the law helping you, this is not a revenue generating crime (unless you bride the officer to do his job).

What happens if a ATV comes flying through that gateway, hits the harrows and sends the person over the handlebars right onto the top of those upside down harrows?. It would without a doubt mangle them, and that would be horrible. His best defence is to occupy the house so that there would be someone there to watch over stuff.

That would be the ATVer's problem in my viewpoint. If the property is posted and they hurt themselves on something that is not an obvious "trap" but something that could just be put there in the normal business of things... well too bad for the trespassers....

ATVs per se, are not the problem. It is just that I do not like several armed people to ride up to me and state they are going hunting on my land. I denied permission then posted No Hunting signs, locked the gates and put up a "Hot" electric fence with a 150 mile charger. Been very few problems since then.

You might post a sign with "By entering this property you agree to a $1000 rent and any trespassing penalties" There are plenty of sensor cameras out there to get evidence. Then take them to small claims.

It's been my experience that ATV riders do in fact believe they own everything, have the right to ride anywhere they desire, and the right to destroy or steal anything and everything that strikes their fancy.

That said, an abandoned farm is very inviting.

electrified high tensile fencing and locked gates has been our ONLY defence from this. our law enforcement WILL NOT enforce no tresspassing laws. sorry but you might as well get use to the fact that you have to protect your own property (senseable) or loose it to others. Don't do anything that would hurt a kid or an adult with a kid sized brain, although we sure are tempted to sometimes.

Come on guys, not all ATV owners are criminals. I own one and find it to be a valuable tool as well as fun from time to time. I think if you were to research it a little you would find that most atv'rs are responsible riders. Your problems are probably coming from some snot nosed brat whos parents gave him an atv so they wouldn't have to spend time with him- and he should be busted and made an example of! I had a neighbor kid that kept running across mine and my nieghbors bean fields and after ignoring repeated warnings his engine mysteriously blew up- might have been related to the gallon of straight alcahol we dumped in the gas tank of his 2-cycle but were not positive. Anyway he can't afford the rebuild and is no longer a problem.

Follow the jerks home and have a front yard conversation about your right to ride your 4wheeler across their front yard at midnight.

Especially if its at night.

Texas law is unique in that it allows that if someone is using the cover of night to commit a crime you can assume they are armed and use deadly force. 30 mins after sundown to 30 mins before sunup if they're on your place doing anything they shouldn't be they could be yours for the taking.

I cant see shooting someone for trespassing unless they are vandalizing and stealing. Can you imagine killing a 18 year old kid for trespassing, I would assume that even in Texas that the Jury would be simpathetic to the parents of that 18 year old and you would get prison time. I dont have a problem with shooting the ATV machine when the guy is off of it, just blast the instument panel with buckshot and oops the ATV is inoperable.

I've had this conversation with my sister-in-law, a District Judge now, formerly assistant DA, here in Texas. Although it's technically true, that trespassers can be shot (if you have posted "no trespassing" signs, plainly visible), the legality of doing that is another matter in today's court system. You have to be able to prove the trespasser was a threat to you or your family members, or that they were stealing.
The question that keeps coming up in my mind, is where are the parents in all this? I learned at an early age to respect other people's property, get permission first, etc. Apparently, those values didn't survive in some families' gene pool...

Yes, No No is right, you will have to be more creative. You will have to pull a "stake out" It will need to be planned with all the equipment that will provide sucess. A video camera, cell phone, food, heat(sit in your car),radios ( to communicate with other "agents"( if you are close to "HQ" home) Now the only reason that I don't like to use nails in boards to punture their tires , is that I get tired of fixing my own tires when I accidently "test" them, due to forgetfullness! If you only knew when or who to suspect,is doing this...This needs to be a project, set a goal, and don't let yourself become frazzled into getting in trouble with the law,I find that if the law discovers they are high school jocks (ball team members) that they will give them a break and tend to screw you over unless you are tuff enough to stand up for yourself once they are caught...Chasing them? Atv's are going to give you trouble if you are in you car, that's where the cell phone( to call in the troops) and video tape comes in , do the best you can with operating the equipment while manuvering for the best photos. Don't announce what and when you are doing your stake out and for cryin out loud be sneaky, at night park the car so reflectors won't give your positon away, or put a seed bag over the reflector ,so it'll fall off before you go out on the highway, just enough to black out your car while sitting in the barnyard..Make this a family outing , kids love to help while you nap, take turns on look out.Hope you have some action while you are awake!and be carefull out there...

well, unless the house in inhabited you will most likely continue to have problems with snoopers/thieves and ATVers. Most people don't care about anything unless they have to pay. People will do most anything if they think they can get away with it and some people are just bold and brassy to no end and would do it right in front of you. Then after you do happen to catch somebody, they'll problably end up hating you and be the ones throwing eggs at your house on Halloween, totally not realizing that they were the ones in the wrong.

When you catch the kid you can "beat him upside his head with a two-by-four to get his attention" and immediately apply a disinfectant using the gasoline/Iodine mixture, if required!

Caution: Do NOT carry matches, a lighter or any other ignition source, if you use this first-aid procedure, since you may be strongly temped to execute further disiplinary measures.
