Since you can no longer get leaded fuel what do you guys do with your older tractors?

I have been running straight unleaded in my 73 combine for the last couple years but I am not sure what is best long term.

If your engine has hardened valve seat inserts
, then it will not need lead, at least to protect the valve system.

Forget the no-lead additives....they are a waste of money and don't do any thing but plug up good gas filters....haven't used it for the last 22 years, with no proublems...

There was an article in "Country Folks" ag magazine a number of years back that gave a formula for using low-lead aviation gas in a ratio with regular gas. I remember computing things out and using one quart of aviation leaded to almost five gallons of unleaded regular to give an acceptable lead amount. I did this for my 8N. I belive a problem would develop with the higher revving Fords as opposed to JD

Ditto what Dr. Evil said. Except if you can't find leaded AV or race gas close; just run a bit rich as all you're trying to do is stop seat reversion on the exhaust side -- so running cooler/richer with hotter plugs is a 9 tenths solution.

Good whiskey is cheaper and a whole lot more fun per ounce that lead additive. So I'd vote for Jack Daniels instead.

You might want to check back posts on this, as the other poster indicated, there have been several. I guess the concensus is to go ahead and run unleaded. Probably won't make a great deal of difference. If you're really worried, go ahead and use a little lead additive - you'll feel better, even if it doesn't make a difference!

Good grief, the unleaded/leaded question again? That's got to be the 40th time this year. What's next? "What oil should I use in my Grandpa's old 1947 Blizburg"?

Sheesh, talk about high stress.

Maybe you should try a little less lead in your coffee-or at least try not reading those posts with obvious titles that you have no interest in.

Several different brands of Race Gas still has lead in it.... I mix a little race gas with the no-lead and it burns fine. Engines only need a little lead to save the exh. valves from recessing into the seats. I mix a gal. of race gas to 5 gal. of no-lead.

I really don't think it will make any difference that a person would notice in their lifetime unless the valves are bad in the engine you are burning it in and then you are going to blame the burnt valves on the unleaded gas. My 1 cent worth, waiting for change. ----deadeye
