I was just wondering if it would harm anything to just use a 12 volt battery without changing anything on the electrical system? I dont care if it charges because I dont use the tractor that much and can just charge the battery when needed. Thanks

After a lot of thinking, what I ended up doing was putting a 12 volt voltage regulator on the generator, and a 12 volt battery. I am waiting for the lights to go out. I bought new 12v bulbs, but they haven't burned out yet - about 50 hrs tractor time now. I put a meter on the voltage leg of the generator and the generator put out 16-17 volts @ a low rpm and quite a bit higher at full rpm. Low rpm is 1000 approx. These old generators are heavily built. They will put out much more than 6v for a long time. I suspect that someday the generator will wear out, but at this rate I will be quite old. It makes a big difference in starting. The starter is real heavy built, so I never worry about that either. My 2c Irv ( my H is a 48 )

Thanks for the replies I have an altinator that I might throw on but I dont use the tractor that much so charging the battery isn't a problem. What kind of ballest resistor should I use?
Thanks
Bruce

I did not use one. I bought one, but never wired it in. The oddest thing was that now the ammeter shows charging at low rpm and discharging at high rpm. I think that this is because I swapped the ground. Irv

And of course if you have lights you'll need to change the bulbs to 12v.

An alternator doesn't cost much. All you need to do is fabricate a bracket and you're there.

well you should put a ballast resistor in the coil wire and un hook the genarator but other then that it would be fine
