Whadda Think?

Mornin'

When I was a young man, I used to work on many 'torched' vehicles and tractors.

The hardest part was getting thru all the mess of the fire, making your mind ignore the soot and getting up the gumpsion to just dive into the job.

It always amazed me that they really looked worse than they were....the damage didn't usually go any deeper than the paint.

I know a young man who caught an old M on fire this summer in the hay field. Rear tires are burnt completely off of the thing.

He wants $100 for it and just wants it out of his sight.

What do you guys think? Is it worth all the hassle? Can a guy get enough parts to clean up a tractor that is this old?

Thanks,

Allan

Find and fix what caused the fire.....those old M's deserve a second chance.....at that price you can put new tires all around....change the fluids, replace the brake linings.....a gaket here and there....a little paint..... she will look like new....worth about $2600 where I live....

Probably saved you the work of trying to get some old rotten tires off and got all the grease burned off for you. Not a bad price for just parts.

I would jump on it. The electrical on most older tractors is basic and as you stated most damage is cosmetic. I may be wrong but I cannot imagine an isolated outside fire getting hot enough to cause structural damage. Had it sat inside a hay barn that burned I would have second thoughts due to the extra heat.

I bought my first motorcycle that had burned up and just had to rewire and replace a fuse block. Did the same thing for a Triumph Spitfire 1500.

Go for it. About 20 years ago I bought an electric fork lift that was in a building that burnt to the ground. My fellow workers thought that I was nuts, half of the steering wheel was melted (aluminum), hydrolic hoses burnt off, and all control wiring was burnt with the micro switches. Upon closer inspection, I found the control cabinet was ok, it was located at the bottom of the fork lift. The hydrolic lift cylinder seals were ok even though the hoses were gone. Also the elecric motor, hydrolic pump and drive train were ok. Dismantaled the unit, sand blasted it and painted it. Also had to replace a drive wheel. Reassesmbled everthing, borrowed a service manual and replaced the control wiring and put in new hydrolic hoses. For the half missing steering wheel I bent a piece of half inch alluminum rigid pipe (being that I am an electrician) and welded it to the rest of the steering wheel. It was a 48 volt unit, I put in (4) 12 volt cat batties. It was a fun project. I used the unit for over 2 years befor I sold it.
