I have a 230 Massey Ferguson. I am having an electrical problem. The amp gauge stays in the middle when running. If I turn the lights on, it shows a discharge. I have had the alternator checked etc. I have a service manual but it doesn't show how to wire the back of the amp gauge. I think it is wired incorrectly (Hot battery wire to discharge side and all other wires to charge side). It ran good all summer. Then a diode burned out on the alternator. Can an amp gauge read wrong? How to wire the back of the amp gauge?

Sounds like your amp guage wiring is correct. You should have only the wire to the battery on 1 post while the alternator output and all acessory feed wires (ignition, lights etc)go on the other post. The burned out diode is a clue. If the new diode is installed in the exciter wire backwards or is too small an amp rating the alternator will not excite(charge). Is this a Delco 10 SI alternator with built in regulator? If so using a small 12V test light you should have power to the #1 wire in the regulator plug only when the ignition is on and constant power to the #2 wire.

there are only 2 wire on an amp gauge one goes to the alternator and the other to the batery the charge of the alternator goes through the amp guage so it either works or it doesn't hope this helps a little by the way they do go bad at times
