I have an 8N with a two speed thansfer lever on the left side of the tractor. With the lever forward I have one set of gears, with the lever pulled to the back I have a set of higher speed gears. If in the middle of the transfer, I pull out on the lever and then pull back I have yet another set of higher speed gears making this a 3 speed transfer. None of my freinds have heard of this, have any of you?

On the 2 speed transfer box can any of you get the third speed by pulling out the lever at mid-point and pulling to the rear?

Yes...That'd be the same as driving it without an aux. transmission. You have 3 positions, Low, High and Straight.

In low on the aux. trans., you'll have to have the throttle almost wide open (2000 rpm)to make your PTO operate at 540 rpms.

Check the archives for Sherman Transmissions...

If the lever is kinda V-shaped,its prolly a Sherman Hi-Lo,and is working correctly. It will also effect your PTO speed,do to the way the N tranny drives the PTO,High range,hi gear(4th) will get you up to appx 24mph from the normal mid teens,so be careful, thats hummin right along w/no suspension to soak up the bumps.

That'd probably be a Sherman auxilliary transmission. The "Over-Under" version that you have was a pretty common, dealer installed option (I have one on my NAA). Do a search of the archives, there's a bunch of info available on the various types of auxilliary transmissions that were available. Also, check out the 9N, 2N, 8n discussion board on this site...you'll really get an education on everything pertaining to your 8N.
