I remember my teen years and going on hayrides. I was a tall skinny redhead with glasses. It seemed that all the guys were more interested in the tractors pulling the wagons than they were to the girls. Some of the boys knew what route the rides would take and would plant beer along the way! Oh for those days to return!! One night the driver shifted a 560 IHC diesel to high TA and took out 6 fence posts. Another time the ride was in silage wagons which had been painted with a wood preservative which irritated bare skin. The wagons had peviously been used to haul sorghum silage which also made us itch.

I pulled a hayride last night. Two old grain wagons pulled with an International 600D was no problem for the vintage tractor. I have 4 small red tail lights burning contiuously and 4 yellow lights flashing all the time plus your standard SMV signs. These lights will run off the 12 volt battery I have mounted in the last wagon for hours and hours. We can be seen very well coming from the rear, but I'm a little concerned about being seen from the front as I just have the 2 small round lights.

I think hay rides are very good fun, but here in Vermont, there is hardly anybody who does it anymore because of the high risk of something happening and getting the crap sued out of them.

I totally agree with RayP. LIGHT THAT WAGON!! Always have people with extra flashlights!! We also get SEVERAL bicycle flashing strobe lights. Get the kind with LED lights. They are brighter, and last longer.

Pick your route carefully. Our nieghbors didn't really like hearing a Johnny Popper at 11 at night.....

Yeah, Son and I did a hayride last weekend, for our church group. Two wagons, pulled by antique tractors. One wagon had an old fashioned grainbox with sides, and straw bales to sit on - for the younger set. Other was a hay rack with logs to sit on - for the older and allergic set. We had a great time.

A BIG word of CAUTION, a few years ago, my wife was nursing at a local hospital, evening shift. Suddenly there were ambulances from all over taking injured to hospitals far and near. Story was, that a fraternity & sorority at a college about 30 miles away had a hayride. Two wagons, pulled by horses. The rear one had a lantern tied to the rear. Somewhere en route, the lantern was lost. A drunk driving a suburban collided with the last wagon. Many serious injuries on both wagons, two horses had to be put down. MORAL OF THE STORY>> Light your equipment like there's no tomorrow, choose your route carefully for visiblilty, and it's probably good to have an escort vehicle behind to provide some protection.

That brings back memories. I used to give hayrides in the fall when I was in high school. Used 2 hayracks with a tail light rigged on the back one. The heathouser on the tractor sure felt good some nights. I always found combs and coins when I cleaned off the racks.
