My dad (1898-1996) made a twin John Deere D setup in the 1930s or 1940s. He used the set up to pull two one-ways in western Kansas.

I think he took the front axle out from under the rear tractor and set it on the draw bar of the lead tractor.

How he handled the control set up I don't know.

I think that there might be a photo of the rig in an album. My brother is caretaker of them and lives quite a distance away, meaning I won't be able to look for awhile.

He took a "Farmers Short Course" at K-State in 1921 or 1922, so he may have learned the rigging there.

I live in MT and I know somebody that used a scraper for a tractor. Can you remember from the article where the guy was located in MT?

Thats the guy. If I remember right, he mounted a chisel plow on it and used a pickup cab. He took it to a few tractor pulls in Cut Bank. I don't have any pictures as I have only seen it a few times myself. Also, the local threshing bee club has a IH W9 and JD R that some farmer put together.

Hi, Folks. One manufacturer of those tandem Fordsons was Doe out of England. There were also a lot 'roll-your-own' versions of this arrangement.

There have been many examples over the years of FARMERS hooking two tractors together to get more power and traction. History indicates that it was the farmers who led the charge for more power, traction and performance from the available tractors and that manufacturers were somtimes a little slow to follow the trend.

I have some photos of various examples of tandem tractors which I will post in Tractor Photos over the next few days. I have no idea where most of them came from because I received them on a CD from a contact in U.S.A. and there was not a lot of information with them other than an ID in the caption.

Among them are tandem JD R's, tandem JD D's, tandem Cases, tandem Fordsons, tandem Australian-built Chamberlains and even a triple JD hook-up which I think is 3 830's. There are even double and triple hook-ups of Farmall F20's side by side on only four wheels.

From the above, it is obvious that the quest for more grunt started fairly early in the development of the farm tractor.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

The triple JD two-banger you're referring to was done by Mr. Dufner out of Buxton, ND. If you look at SF or Farm Journal magazines from the early 1960s, you can find double hookups with various brands- AC (WD45s), Case, Moline, Farmall, etc. I remember one double tractor with a Wisconsin on the rear platform chained into the pto to add hp. Also remember two old tractors hooked to a couple plows, guy had a 5 bottom outfit for about $400- 1960 dollars.
