I'm writing a report about Perkins engines and Kubota engines and would very much appreciate any input from someone who has an experience/opinion, good or bad, with either make of engine. Just looking for stuff like: are they reliable? do they give good performance? do they give value for money? would you buy another Perkins/Kubota powered vehicle? which of the two is better? etc.

Thanks for any help.

I've got a Perkins diesel in my Long R9500 - take a peak at it - just posted it in the photos. The tractor sat for 5 years. after draining off the old diesel, replacing the fuel filters, and putting good fuel in, we cracked the injectors, bleed them off, replaced the battery and the tracotr started right up. I haven't touched the motor any more than that. It's a very strong, and dependable motor. If I ever buy anoth tractor, I'd want a Perkins like this one.

I have 4 Kubota tractors with from 5300 hours to 650 hours and I have had no engine problems. I think the big thing like any piece of equipment is proper maintenance. Good luck on your report.

Hi, Jon. I have very little direct experience of Kubota engines but I do see a lot of them around and hear very little if any 'bad press' about them. What does that tell you?

Re Perkins engines: I have used quite a few of them in many different applications over the last 40 or so years and have yet to have one suffer a 'major' while I have been using it. That is not to say that they don't break down. They just seem to do it less than some other engines on the market.

It is my understanding that Caterpillar bought Perkins out about 7-8 years ago and the Perkins engine plants are now manufacturing Cat as well as Perkins engines. I think that might say something about the quality of Perkins manufacturing processes. The first inkling I had of this was about 6 years ago when I was using a hired de-watering pump with an engine labelled 'Caterpillar by Perkins'. Upon enquiring, I was told that Cat had bought out Perkins. I must confess though that I have not had that confirmed anywhere else than the man who told originally.

Hope this helps.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Both companys make good engines, But the Kubota's, like all the other Japanease designs, are light to medium duty engines, where Perkins engines are a HD design. Both engines are good value, as long as you use them for what they were designed for. A heavy tillage tractor needs a HD engine, but a lighter tractor to pull wagons, dig post holes, ect. can have a lighter duty engine and will last many thousands of hours. Robert

Jon,

I have no direct experience with Kubota. As far as Perkins, they are very reliable and long lasting engines. As with any diesel, their life expectancy is directed related to oil change intervals and other maintenance and operational factors such as air cleaner service, cooling system and load factors. "Dogging" or "lugging" any diesel engine at low RPM's can damage the bottom end (bearings). Perkins are used in many Allis Chalmers & Massey Ferguson tractors and probably other makes as well. I ran a 6-354 in a shrimp boat in Mississippi for a solid 10 years with no major failures. The engine was a '55 model that came out of small crane in Louisiana. Rebuilt it and marinized it and it did the job well. Perkins are also known for their excellent fuel economy. Hope that gives you a little info of use.

Frank Perkins started to make diesel engines I want to think in the 30s was a very successful company owned for many years by the varity corp of canada who owned massey-ferguson,hence the fittment of perkins into massey products, owned now for several years and fitted it seems into everything by the #1 manufacturer of quality equipment, CATERPILLAR, what more is there to say.
