What are the advantages and disadvantages of a utility style tractor against a higher farmall wide front style. I know the tire size is different.

Both styles of tractors do what they are designed for just fine...until the time comes to do some repair work on them. At that time, if you're working on a utility, you will wish you had picked out a old simple rowcrop. Everything on a utility seems to have been compressed into a smaller, harder to work on package. There are a number of parts for utilities that are more expensive than their rowcrop counterparts.

Hi Guys,

What I like about the rowcrop tractors is that people don't snicker, call you names behind your back and throw rocks at ya. :>)

Sorry fellas, just kiddin'; couldn't resist!! :>)

I'll take the row crop anyday for field work. I like being up in the fresh air and out of the dust. I like the visibility aspect too. I have a utility also but prefer it for pulling equipment back and forth to the field and for loader work around the buildings.

utility types are good if you are working on hilly ground and also with loaders but the farmall type seem better for haying and that sort of thing where you need to see better and need the clearance I have both types and like them about the same it just sepends on what I plan to do wihich tractor I go get on

The trade name "Farmall" denotes a row-crop type of tractor. Made to work in fields with mounted tools such as cultivators or pull type implements where you needed to adjust the tractor's wheel spacings to drive between rows of crops. Also they sit higher for crop clearance.
Utility type tractors generally don't have the adjustable rear tire spacing and sit lower to the ground. Utility's are fine for plowing, discing and other field work that don't need crop clearance and are more desirable for some attachments such as loaders.
My personal preference is the row-crop because I like sitting higher where I can see what's going on around me, and can see what's coming such as, groundhog holes, rocks etc.
I don't see much row-crop work done around here anymore. The only thing I see is cultivating tobacco and a little sweet corn here and there.

Maybe its just me but I think the row crop style pulls a lot better, better weight distribution then a utility. It seemed like our little 460 utility would spin out long before any rowcrop tractor would.

Is the pulling due to weight distribution or rear tire diameter ?
