Posted an add this morning to sell a 1951 Allis Chalmers tractor. I got an offer from a person in the UKI. It seems like I have read about a possible scam involving this type of transaction. Please let me know if you can advise.

I must admit falling for one of these. I am waiting on the money order to clear before I do anything. In the meantime I have been accused of stealing and even had my life threatened. If anyone wants details my story is posted in the Oliver forum. I am not out anything yet. The tractor is still in my barn. I have since had the same type offer from other individuals. Once I tell them cash only I never hear back from them.

I wonder how many sites these guys scan???? I had an add for Grain Bed Sides here, would take practically anything or give away to get rid of. This foreign fella writes me right away and has a fella owing him $3500. He wants to have that guy send a "certified" check to me, Take what I need for the sides, (he didn't even ask price) and send rest to him at a certain US address. He would arrange pick-up later. They must send this scam out to anybody with something for sale. I had same thing on a Truck I was selling last month. Still, wonder WHO'S looking at all these sites for ads? Suppose it's "Terrorists"? and we're financing our own destruction?? How about the one mail from Africa usually, that has millions in bank he can't let anyone know about and wants You to keep it in your account for him, till he gets "free" or something and you get to keep 15% when he picks up! That's same story pretty much too. What a World, hey?

the way I did it when they sent a "certified Cashiers check" was; i took it to the bank and had it sent for collections prior to cahing/depositing to see if it was good. Sure enough it wasn't, now it opened a can of worms and got a lot of people involved. tell them if they want you to send money to shipper that you will as soon as bank verifies that check is good.

If it seems fishy delete it. If the guy is realy serious he will contact you again.

If someone from overseas is offering to buy a piece of large equipment sight unseen, you can be pretty well assured that they have no intention of taking delivery of it. In the case of your Allis, the shipping costs alone could be more than the tractor would be worth in the UK.

Usually these are variants of the "Nigerian Scam". If you google on "Nigerian Scam", you'll get more info than you want. Basically, the scam is this: The buyer wants to pay with a "certified check" for more than the selling price of the item. You're supposed to refund the difference. In fact, the check will be worthless, you'll be out any money you sent them, and the buyer will never take delivery.

Believe it or not, thousands of people have fallen for these scams, which is why it's still going on.

need to have the cash first. explain the situation and see how he intends to pay, and receive the tractor. if paying by certified check, hold the tractor for 2-3 weeks untill the check is verified and finalized. your bank can come back a couple weeks after the fact and tell you a "certified check" or "bank check" is no good and you lost the money and tractor.
