Ford 4000 3 cylinder diesel engine

I have a 550 loader/backhoe - the original engine went south and I have installed an engine from a 4000 Ford. I cannot find out where to install my oil sender and heat sender. There is a hole on the right side of the block under the injector pump and when cranked over, oil came out of it - looks like fine thread 5/16 hole size. Temp sender hole in fromt of head is about a 1/2 inch hole. There is a plug on the left side just below and ahead of the oil filter, but it seems as though it has never been removed - I cannot budge it. Looking for a couple of simple answers that don't seem to be found around here. I picked up the 2 senders today from a Ford/NH dealer and they don't fit where he said they should. HELP!! Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. My engine does have the 3/8" hole in the front of the head for the water temp sender. There is also a plug in the side of the block where you are saying the oil sender should go, but I cannot get it out. I put a 1/4" allen in there and it turned out the corners, it is in there that tight. One other question for you. There is a 5/16" hole, tapped with fine thread, on the right side of the block, just below and to the front of the fuel injector pump. There was a red plastic plug in it when I got it from the rebuilder. I removed the plug, and when I was cranking the engine to bleed the injectors, oil started coming out of this hole. Is it possible that they had an oil sending unit in here??? Just wondering if not for that, what it would be for, and if not used, why it did not have an aluminum pipe plug in it rather than the red plastic one. Thanks!

The only application I have seen the plug behind the pump used for was to supply base oil to the injection pump. I have only seen that on later models, but it could have been used on earlier one as well. I don't know. I'm not sure what feed it has, but probably off the main gallery. Stick a gauge in and see what pressure is there. Something around 40 psi would be normal for a warm engine at rated speed (I think). So, if you have reliable pressure there, and you can fit the pressure switch in there, I see no reason not too. Those plugs can be a bugger to get out too. Mabey try a metric allen bit slightly larger, and hammer it in. Sometimes that will bite enough. I am rather reluctant to suggest heating it. Guess that depends on your comfort zone there. Again, with the oil pressure sender/switch, I have only seen them on the left as described before. Hope this helps you out some. Good luck.

Is there a Ford 4000 3 cylinder made in 1950's? If there is are parts still available and what's the web site?

As Gary said, the oil pressure sender goes in the block slightly ahead of the oil filter, but to the rear and below the generator, on about the same plane as the PS pump. If the threads are wrong, you could either get the right sender for that particular block, or adapt it with fittings. You need to be careful of the temperature sender. It is located to the right of the thermostat in the head. The 4000 had a 1/8 NPT hole. Here is where it can get tricky. Somewhere along through the sands of time, they changed that hole to 3/8 NPT. I'm not sure when, or if the 550 would have the small or large hole. I have also noticed that the newer instrument clusters require a different resistance value from the sender. I'm not sure where that change took place either. You will need to check the value of the senders to be sure. Safest bet is to use the sender for the 550. I changed one out on my 4000, to the newer style, and had to drill and tap the head... So just check carefully. You don't want to cook your new engine because of the wrong sender. They may be the same, or not. Good luck.

Oil pressure sending unit screws into the side of the block just about straight down from the rear of the generator. The temperature sending uit screws into the front of the head just to the right of the thermostat housing.
