I recently replaced the head gasket on my cub cadet mower (149 hydro), with a kohler engine (k321 I think). 14 hp. I gave everything a good looking over as I did this. When turning the engine over to inspect the valves, I noticed that on the compression stroke the exhaust valve opens slightly for just a moment, then closes for the rest of the stroke. It opens slightly when the piston is just starting its upward journey.

This does not seem correct to me, if anyone has any input I would appreciate it.

This is the correct operation for a Kohler. It reduces the compression slightly at cranking speed only. After it crank the centrifigual force on the camshaft lets it stay closed for the entire cycle.

That is as it should be. The short duration opening is a built in compression relief operated by the camshaft at cranking speed to aid in starting, and relieve the strain on the starter motor. Once the engine is up and running the valve operates normally.
