Does anyone know whether either of these two tractors has a live PTO. None of the spec. sheets I've looked at seem to say. Thanks

They are nice tractors, just not modern. The M in particular is not safe for a new driver.

There was an M&W hand clutch for the Farmall M that gave you most of the live power and live hydraulic usefulness. It was like the hand clutch on the AC WD, it decoupled the final drive from the rest of the transmission. You could stop the tractor but not shift gears. There is a Zane live thang that gives you live hydraulic on an 8N, but no live PTO. The Farmall SuperMTA, 400, and 450 were basically the same tractor but with more HP and real live power and live hydraulic.

"M not safe for a new driver????? ?????" We sure get some off-the-wall comments on this board! Steverrrr---I'm interested in why you make such a statement. I spent hours, days, weeks, springs, summers, falls---on a Farmall M beginning at about the age of 8. Sometimes I think I still have it attached to my butt. Please give us some idea of where you are coming from, OK? Like any of your experiences with an M or H that would lend credibility to your statement???

Hmmmmm I wonder how many HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of YOUNG Farm Boys learned how to drive on M's & H's??? I did... when I was about 5-6 yrs old. Used Dad's '51 M to pull the hay rope SOLO about that time. Granted Dad was setting the forks on the rack and I was only 75 ft away....Broad statement like that should be clarified.

Dr. EVIL, I couldn't have said it better myself. I learned to drive pulling a disc with dad's 1942 Farmall H. Bought my first tractor when I was in the eighth grade. A 1949 Oliver 66 with a narrow front. That was in 1980, 23 years later and I STILL have her. Todd

The 8N does not... and there's no conversion (that I'm aware of) to give it one. An ORC (over-running clutch/coupler) is recommended for any heavy, PTO driven implements (i.e. brush hog), so that you'll be able to stop when you want/need to...

i guess you keep asking about these two models because they're in your area for probably less than $2000. You know what criteria to find in a tractor but you want somebody to tell you one of these is good. I dont think anybodies going to do that. Both these tractors are I wish tractors. I wish it had this or that. So save some more money and keep looking or buy them both and ones short comings will be made up by the other but neither will do all.

Neither one did from the factory, but a couple companies made a conversion kit to make the Farmall ACT like it did. Not sure if anyone did something similar for the Ford. The first FARMALL with both live Hyd. and live PTO was the 1954 Super M-TA, then the 300/400 followed by the 350/450.
