Ford 850 distributor question

I recently bought a 1957 Ford 850, or at least I am told that is the year. I don't know how to tell. It was running rough and I looked in the distributor and found the rotor didn't seem to fit the distributor shaft very well, the flat spot that aligns the rotor to the shaft is not right and the rotor can turn freely back and forth about 25 degrees. Much to my surprise, a new rotor fit the same way.
Perhaps it is not a 1957 model. Or perhaps a previous owner changed the distributor.
Anyone know how to tell?
Where is the serial number?
How do I tell what year it actually is?
Thanks,
Paul Ward

Sounds like you got the distributor question handled. The serial number is how to tell what year your tractor is. There are usually some date codes on various components that can substantiate the serial number. Here's where to go to learn where the model and serial numbers are and what they mean.

There is a little spring clip that fits on the distributor shaft. Go to the Ford-New Holland dealer and tell them you need the little spring clip thing that goes on the distributor and they'll know what it is. Buy two of them. ;)

There is a spring clip that slides over the shaft and keeps the rotor tight, it usually falls and is hard to find in the grass or dirt, it is still available, the serial# is below the air cleaner stamped on top of the transmission housing, you should see 850 then a longer number between 2 diamonds this is the serial#.

the serial # is located or the left side of the tractor on a flat suface of the clutch housing just to the rear of the starter and below the battery box.does the rotor have the little metal spring tightening piece in it
