Flail mowers do a much better job than a rotary cutter, but don't buy a used one until after you have seen it hooked up to a tractor and run at PTO speed without vibrating itself to death. I found this out the hard way - at least I have lots of spare flails now, as I ended up having to buy another one, as the first one I bought had a bent cutter shaft ...

Check out the Alamo (formerly Mott) site for some pictures.

Flail mowers are quite a bit more expensive than rotary finish mowers and brush hogs. They have a number of advantages, however. They do a better job of picking up grass that's been flattened by the tractor's tires, and they don't leave any windrow. Since the shaft is horizontal instead of vertical, trash is not thrown to the side, a big consideration in highway mowing.

If you're considering the purchase of a used flail mower, check out its condition carefully as parts can be pricey.

'Flail' around here would be a bunch of knives on a spinning shaft to cut the grass. Like a corn stalk chopper, or a straw chopper on a combine, if you are familiar with farm stuff.

Different than a bush hog.

To put it simply a flail mower has a horizontal shaft with chains fastened to it. The chains have small chunks of metal attached to the ends.It rotates like a rototiller would and "Flails" the grass.Hiway departments use them because they are much more forgiving than a brush hog when they contact rocks or other debris. They won't fling a section of metal fence post out the side into someones car. I would check it out carefully before buying a used one as most I have ever seen for sale are quite beat.
