I bought a 1010R from a fella over the phone. He delivered the tractor to me. Later on I started the tractor up and it smoked so bad you could hardly sit on the seat. I found out that when it was being unloaded the distributor vibrated off. Could the smoking be caused by the distributor being put back on wrong (timing)? I really don't believe the tractor was smoking before the distributor ordeal. I haven't been able to get back out to check on it, but I thought I would get your opinion in the mean time. Thanks.

Mine does the same thing. I have a 1010R that smokes when you first start her up. After a few seconds, she clears up and doesn't smoke. Mine needs new valve guides. She is getting a rebuild this coming winter.

Have patience with the little 1010... they're a much maligned little tractor, but a nice little tractor to have around.

Get your timing set to spec, check the fuel filter, and drain the carburetor, if you can, to get rid of any crud sloshing around the bottom of the float bowl. Check and/or change the antifreeze, engine and rear end oil, and the air filter.

Now warm the tractor up under a load, and after it has run for a while and has been worked a little, THEN you can begin to get a feel for the shape it's in.

Good luck!

If the timing is off it should be missing or backfiring-at least running a little rough. Don't know about the smoking.
