loader cylinder construction

I have a loader bucket cylinder that's leaking down. I took it apart and removed the packing and the seal and thought I would remember the proper orientation come time to replace them. Well, too much time elapsed for my failing memory and now I need help. These are "V" or "chevron" shaped packing rings. There are some on the end of the rod and some within the packing gland. So, which way does the cup face? Do both sets face the same direction? And the oil seal at the other end of the rod, which way does its' cup and spring face? I imagine there must be a general rule about these things, like the the way house insulation faces- backing paper toward the heated side of the house...
Thanks in advance.
Roger

marlowe;
Thanks for the reply. Cup to pressure. Makes sense. What about the oil seal, which is external to the packing gland, which direction does it face?
Thanks again.
Roger
