when starting our 4020 diesel it will ping/knock like when using starting fluid. It has also started to blow white smoke when starting. These do not happen every time and they don't always happen together. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help Dave.

You don't say how old a machine you have. I know a 4020 is considerd old by some. It sounds like your injection pump advance is sticking. The pinging is called fuel rattle and is caused by overfueling on cold startup. Could be time for a pump overhaul as well as fuel injector tune up. Both the pump and injectors are rebuildable by any reputable diesel shop.

Dave, have you checked the timing of inj.pump?Gear wear can cause timing to be off a little. Also I would check injectors for correct pressure and spray pattern.Jim B

Pinging, knocking, and white smoke are signs of unburnt diesel. Many times this is caused by a low cetane fuel. The higher cetane products aid greatly in start-up, it combusts more rapidly and more completely.

Look for a better diesel would be the cheapest place to start in my opinion.

I should add that if it is low cetane causing this, that it will be exagerated as it gets colder outside.

Also, do not expect the first tank full to take care of the problem, but the second or third should.
