This is a little off topic but weeds are a subject near and dear to us all so I thought I'd post my .02 on the subject.

Some have stated that "WalMart's" brand is weaker than the name brand. I did a "survey" of Walmart, Lowes, TSC and my local feed store. The product known as "Round up" contains one active ingrediant, "Glyphosate".(for short) I found this ingrediant in concentrates for a few thru 120 gallons of product. The % quantity of Glyphosate varied per container depending on quantity to be prepared. The % to mix varies depending on type of plant to be treated. X% of glyphosate will make X# gallons of product whether that product is brand name, "generic" or store brand. The only difference I can see is that The others cost something like 1/2 the $$ of "round up." Oh. The other has killed my weeds just fine. Just my .02. Have at it fellers.

There are many generic versions that contain 41% active ingredient. We've used 140 gallons or so of generic glysophate on RR soybeans this year and saw no difference in weed control when compared to Roundup Weathermax. On one field using our GPS guidance system I sprayed every other 60' pass with Weathermax then came back and sprayed the middles with Glystar Plus generic glysophate and saw no difference in control. We saved about $3/acre using the generic which really adds up on 850 acres of beans.

Is Round Up Plus (glyphosate 68%) sold in the USA?

Some people change from 36% to 68% here

I was told this summer that Monsanto makes 90% of all generic roundup. I bought Bucaneer, which is the original roundup formula. Just follow the label, and they'll all work.

Make sure you use a full rate of glyphosate! If not, the weeds won't die, and may even develop a reistance to it. I'm currently doing an experiment here at college with round-up(glyphosate) resistant marestail. Generic brands work just as well depending on your concentration and surfactant.

I use clearout at 16.60 a gallon. as good as roundup, a lot of farmers use a lot of this stuff.

We used Clearout last year, just as good as Round-up yet way less. This year we used Credit, just a touch cheaper then Clearout and supposedly made by Monsanto.

You're right, now do the math to see what you're paying for a few ounces of the active ingredient. Homeowner containers at Walmart cost far and away more then a commercial can of Round-up at an ag supply store.

And that's only if you are bent on buying an overpriced, medeocre performing herbicide (I don't really care for Round-up if you can't tell). Take a look at some of the others, like Crossbow. They work better and cost less.

i have found that the "homeowner" grade of roundup which is (18%) is about as useless as water. if you want to kill weeds then get the 41% roundup (brushkiller). does a lot better job and faster also. i also tried the generic brands and did not have very good results from them. nothing like the original roundup. also spray weeds when the weather is dry and hot for best results.

The "big" difference is the results you get with each.I have tried both, and even did my own little "side by side comparison". The original had MUCH better results. You don't save a penny, if you have to go back and spray it again. Nothing like the real thing!

I figure the generic is just as good as the brand name as long as the ingredients/strength is the same.
Sort of like buying Levi's Jeans vs Lee. Lee is 1/3 the cost and last just as well. Of course I don't have the prestiege of going around advertising for Levi on my rear :)
