I have a 1953 Farmall Super A and am told by the IH dealer that there were two sizes of engines. How do I identify what engine I have in order to get parts such as gaskets, etc? The tractors serial number is 345728J and the model number is FAA. I would appreciate any help I can get on this.

Yes you could have a C113 or a C123. The bore diameter is what determins the cu in. You can rebuild it to the 123 size no problem. Do you have water pump on this unit? Also you need to measure the liner o-ring seal diameter of block to get right parts. Should measure 3.311 or 3.437 in diameter. Simple engine if you need help let me know. Good luck.

To Turbo:
The engine has no water pump. This is why I am trying to identify the engine. It pushes anti freeze out the radiator overflow after running 15-30 minutes at lower rpm. I think it needs a head gasket.

Probably is a head gasket problem. Will only get worse. Be sure to get the proper head gasket. Without water pump the water port holes are larger for more coolant flow.

let it find its own level, then if it keeps going down worry about it. if head gasket is bad you will see bubbles in antifreeze as tractor is running or have antifreeze in oil.
good engines will spit out some water if filled full when cold and then run hard

Lee,
did you fill the radiator all the way full. I don't think you are supposed to fill it full. Someone else on here will know more than I about it though.

The early Super A has a C-113 (113 cubic inch) engine. The later, S/N 310300 and up, used a C-123 engine. However not all C-123 engines are identical. They were used on Super A, Super C, 100, 200, 130, 140, 230, 240. You should use the casting number for parts identification. On my F-140, the casting number (XXXXX RX) is behind the oil filter.
