I was starting my 'H' while standing on the ground because I had a loose battery conection. I screwed up and didn't make sure she was in neutral first. Of course it fired up immediatley and could have run me over. As it was I had to chase it and get on it before it ran into my other tractor. It would have served me right.

I had a pretty good scare last Thursday morning, while attempting to set the disk, standing behind my JD A, working the clutch lever with my righ hand, trying to drop the bolt in the slot with my left----I accidently put "too much clutch" and the tractor jumped back about 2 feet, the disk turned, and all of a sudden, I didn't have very much space to stand in!
Scared the $---heck out of me. I got lucky this time. Like others have said, you just can't be too careful around these toys of ours..

Just B4 I gave my farmall H away to a local church I was running the H in my garage and oops bumped the garage door support with the left rear tire. I was able to bend it back with channel locks, have big tractors in regular garages can be dangerous.

About had a similar thing happen to me. Dad always liked to leave a tractor in gear instead of setting the brakes to keep it from rolling. One time I didn't know Dad had been on the tractor and I reached up and hit the starter button on the Farmall 560. It didn't start... thank God... since I was standing in front of the rear tire! But.... I learned to check the shifter EVERY TIME!!!!

Yup--been there, done that. Started our Farmall A in gear up in the hayloft when I was about 10. Like others have noted, it WOULD be the one time in a hundred that the dang thing started on the first crank! Luckily Dad saw it starting to push me into the wall and jumped for the switch. It's an excellent way to ruin a good pair of underwear..... .

about 2 years ago, I was moving one tractor, in order to get another out of the barn. I THOUGHT I put it in park. Turns out that it was in hi-range. I left it running, and jumped off. I got to watch our BRAND NEW TRACTOR go into a pond. Accidents can happen to anyone. They happen more often when you are in a hurry. I would say that no one was hurt, but my dad had to pay for my stupidity, and that hurt him a bunch!

Gary, Safety is such an important aspect of farming, that I wish YT would have a section and or forum devoted to safety alone. There are things that sometimes we either take for granted or don't think about it until something terrible happens. Believe me, I could write a book ( I may someday) on some of the things I personally have seen, and experienced, from tipping a tractor over, to sickle bar accidents to PTO mishaps, to fires. I've seen way too much, and I think that every time we can share one of these incidents with someone else, we raise the awareness of just how important safety really is.

Why don't you suggest that to the Web site owner?

Sounds like a really good idea.

And those ornery things always seem to start on the first turn when they're in gear. I started my H when it was in 3rd with a baler hitched to the back one time...

The H has a grand and simple parking brake function. i always leave the tractor in neutral and use the parking brake. if fact i never leave any tractor in gear. my father in law on the other hand always leaves tractors in gear. sooooo, i had a simular experience to yours after he played with my h. so i always (after tht experience anyway) check the shifter now before starting any tractor.
