I have a Farmall M that badly needs a new set of rear tires. I was thinking about Firestone traction field and road or possibly a Titan. I think they are about the same price, but the titan is 6 plys the firestone is 4. Should i go with the firestone becuase it is a well recognized name, or the titan becuase it has 2 extra plies? the tractor is a working tractor and does everything from raking hay to plowing and disking. I was also thinking of changing from 13.6x38 to 14.9X38. Is it ok to put the 14.9x38 tires on the factory 12" rim? And will the bigger tire pull any better or should i stay with the original? Thanks for you help!!!

14.9 is considered an odd-ball size. You will pay a lot more for it because of this, they generally even cost more that a 15.5-38 of the same brand/type. It is just something the tire companies do because of limited demand. If you can find a pair at a reasonable price and that is what you want they would be OK to use since you would only be one size over on a 12" rim.
If you are using it for working and want the best I would say go for radials, Firestone 7000, Michelin Agribib, General/Continental AG85. I believe the Michelin is available in either 13.6 or 14.9 and the others in 13.6R38 (same as 340/85R38). Radials will be expensive but you may be able to do without loaded tires, extra weights, etc.

You can generally go one inch wider or narrower on any rim. So a 12 inch rim could go to a 13 inch tire, meaning with current size marking, a 13 inch tire is now a 14.9 tire. (14.9 is the cross-sectional width of the tire).

I have 16.9's on a 12" rim and they work just fine. But if you load them up, it take's three men and a boy to move them around.

We've used Goodyear, Firestone, Armstrong, Titan, Michelin and B.F. Goodrich.

The only bad thing I can say about any of those is the Michelin ones. The set we have is on the front of a John Deere 4850, and they're showing signs of extreme stubble damage after only a couple seasons. Goodyears on the back of the same tractor have no signs of similar damage. Our 4955 and 4755 run over the same fields and stubbles, and none of those tires are showing that sort of damage either.

The 4955 got a full set of new tires a few years back. Kleber tires on the front, and our first try with Titan tires on the back. I run the 4955 the most, to do the bulk of tillage. I'm very impressed with the Titans. They're giving great traction, with no excessive wear.

Several of our antiques have those Traction Field & Road, mainly because they're one of the few tires available in the obsolete sizes.

In your situation, I'd definitely go with the 6-ply Titans. Titan is a new name in tires, but they seem to be doing the right things with their products. If you want to know more about this newer name, here's a link to their site:

I agree that the titans are a really good tire, and probably the best bet for your money. other good choices are firestone and good year which usually are more pricey. some "el cheapo" brands such as "premium" and galaxy have good traction, but you need to watch out for sidewall cracking on theses cheap brands.

For a working tractor install Michelyn or Firestone 13.6x38 radials running at about 10-12psi on a 6500 lb "M" Does more work on less fuel.

Once you price them I think you will be happy with the 13.6's around here 14.9's are over 100.00 a tire higher

I think gene is right with what he says, on the average M, 13.6-38's are big enough, but if your M has a kit in the engine that "soups 'er up" a little, you'll be happier with the 14.9's. And 14.9's will be okay on the later Farmall M rear rims, the two step type, but the earlier type with just the single step in the center are too narrow. All this is assuming you want to use your tractor, if all you're going to do is "play around" and show your tractor the smaller(13.6's) tires are fine and correct for it. Early M's came with 11-38 rear tires, then in about 1945-46 time they started putting 12-38's on them which was a blessing because 11-38's were just too small. Oh-FYI, 12-38's are the same as 13.6-38's in the modern sizing system. Most Super M's came with 13-38's(14.9's today).

i was you i would stay with the 13.6 for several reason. the first the bigger tire takes horsepower cause of the bigger size an the faster speeds. 2nd the tires will not fit very well on the 12 inch rims. you would need to go to a 14 inch rim. an third they just dont look right the taller tire on that size of tractor.
