I just finished a book where the author writes about "an old red John Deere tractor." Has John Deere ever made a red tractor? fph

During the "developmental trials" of the New Generation tractors, they were painted red and a darker yellow, to disguise them, as they were tested outdoors. It seems that everyone wanted to know what Deere was up to. They found out in August of 1960. (the colors were very simalar to old Massey-Harris colors)

Heck, I just returned from a vacation trip and we stopped at the John Deere Pavillion in Moline, Ill. Right there on the floor for everyone to see was a fully restored John Deere (M, I believe) in its original color of RED. JD would, on special order , paint their tractors in your company color. Most non green machines went to highway departments or the military. Ed

I have made a whole website dedicated to Deeres early industrial tractors. Plenty of colors to choose from, yellow, orange, red, blue, white, and about any color you could think up!

Heck--just go to tractor supply and get a gallon of John Deere green paint and paint your tractor. In a couple of years you'll have a blue John Deere!!

Mother Deere will paint your equipment any colour you want. The military get a whole range of colours. If you read JR Hobb's book "Little Giants" there is a article devoted to odd coloured JD's.

Yeah, saw a green & yellow farmall at a show the other day too... Bet your author screwd up however. Any more farm errors, that would indicate author was not a born & bred farmer? It just destroys an author's credibility when they make a boo-boo like that! When I get into a science fiction, and the author makes a scientific blunder, on something that's common knowledge - I'm done right there! (But then I have a degree in science, too!)

It is well documented that John Deere did produce several non-industrial model D tractors painted International red. Even Two Cylinder Magazine has had articles about it. There was also several more documented that the dealers changed from green to red before being sold. The one I inherited was changed at the dealership because the original buyer was a parts man at the local IH dealership. He wanted a D and told them he could not have any tractor that was not red. That was also documented as a dealer's changeover. Then there was also one (1) gold D produced.

When I read science fiction that is just what I expect fiction. As mentiond earilier I have heard that John Deere painted tractors didfferent colors for different agencies I did see a red John Deere when I lived in Washington state I have also seen red Allis tractors and I saw an orange Ford once. So who is to say that the author did not know about an old red John Deere?

Yes, over the years for many models, you could special order Deere to paint a tractor many different colors. Yellow, orange, red even blue, were all popular with government maintenance depts. who bought tractors for mowing right-of-way, etc. Deere dealers were also know to repaint a new tractor, if that's what the buyer wanted.

John Deere for a time, and probobaly still does, paint tractors any color you want. In the early days of two cylinders, you could order a tractor to match the color of your barn!
