i was wondering if it is infact legel to tow an implement with steel wheels on the road, it would be a bit noisy but as long as it didnt damage the road i dont see what the problem would be. i am going to be borrowing a steel roller that is made from 6 old steel tractor wheels( with the cleats removed) they are all bolted side by side and filled with concrete. its too heavy to go on my trailer and its only going about a mile or two so i am gona just tow it with my tractor, its pretty much backroads. i was just curious if anyone has ever had any instances with the law and steel wheeled stuff. i know years ago people used to tow steel wheeled hay rakes on paved roads but it may not have been legal even then

I wonder just how heavy this roller is and if it could be doing damage that is not very visible. Would you pull it across your concrete driveway?

As far as it being legal or illegal goes, there probably is some law that would cover pulling a heavy object on a paved public road. Probably if you asked a law enforcement officer about it, they could fairly quickly tell you what the law is and what the penalty would be for doing it. But I would not suggest asking a cop about it or telling him that you plan to do it.

It is unlikely that you would get caught travelling a couple of miles, especially if you make the move early in the morning, when there is not much of any traffic. But you will have to use those roads later and you don't want to damage them. Let your conscience be your guide.....

Maybe the suggestion of calling in a false report to reduce the chance of a cop seeing you was a joke. But unless you are really remote, I would guess that your law enforcement agency would have the capability of finding out very quickly where a phone call originated. And that would almost insure that you would get a visit from a couple of police cars, probably about the time you are pulling the roller home. In my area, if 911 is called by mistake and the caller hangs up right away, it is treated as a true emergency and officers respond, often running code!

Good luck, I hope you make a decision that works out well for you.

It is legal if you get away with it.

right before you plan to move it, pick up the phone and call in an armed robbery, fire, and riot on the other side of town. then while all of the authorities are busy, move the equipment.

actually i think you will be ok as long as you have an SMV sign and are not damaging the road surface. as others said, just go for it, don't ask. if the sheriff says no, then your stuck.

Well it sounds to me like enough have responded to have a "JURY OF YOUR PEERS" in case you get caught and go to court.

Let's see, here in Kansas we get $10 per day for jury duty, plus mileage----

Have no idea about CT or even USA but here as long as it a "SAFE" load and it doesn't damage the surface of the road ther is nothing the law can do if you are pulling it with a tractor. If you used your truck that might be a differnt story but a tractor is all fair.

Like everyone else has said, make sure you are following every other law (i.e. Slow Moving sign)and just do it.

Since you are in the enlightened state of CT, it may be illegal. But, like the others said, do it anyway. Have an SMV sign on if possible.
It's much easier to get forgiven than it is to get permission.

Like Jim said the Amish do it. 'round here all the roads have gray scrape on them from the Amish. If the job is close the Town Hiway dept. drives our roller to it. As long as there are no cleats there is no problem.

If the Amish can do it why can't you?

I would think the only thing they could get you for would be the weight, if it was on a trailor that would be spread out over several feet of highway instead of inches. But that would be being extremely picky I'd just get forgivness instead of permission (its easier). Brian

I don't see why not. As long as there are no cleats to brake the blacktop, which if it did, i suppose you would be billed.for it. Don't forget your slow moving sign, which would be most important .

if you are going to pull on county road call the sheriff, i would imagine too if you do no damage, and you are pulling with a tractor, with your S.M.V. sign. why would that be wrong. it is a free country. just dont break the road. and whatch your toes. allan b.

Rule No. 1- for this type of operation, never call the sheriff. If pressed, he will probably tell you its illegal, and then you're stuck. If you just do it, even if caught, you can plead ignorance and be about 99% sure of getting away with it. As many of us 30+ years married guys know, its generally easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission.

It would all depend on the laws in your state.. Who knows the laws?? The sheriff doesn't know all the laws.. So,, if they don't know, you know the kind of answer you're going to get.. No!!! You can't do it.. Best,, don't ask..
I even pull a disc on the road and it's not a problem. Just take to set out of the disc.. I have lots of steel wheeled equipment and never hesitate to take it on the roads, highways included. The law usually won't mess with farmers.
