With all the stories of bad luck, I found it easier to count my blessings. With a few "troubles" along the way, I've had one of the best years in a long time. And it looks to be getting better! My father had a fairly accurate way of "measuring" soybean yields. It took into account the number of pods, the size, and various other factors. Last night, we checked a 120 acre field that has always been very productive. If the old "formula" is still right, I might get 70 bu. this year. Our corn looks very promising, and the hay barn is about to bust, with one more cutting to go. And the best thing is, I finally managed to buy my OWN farm this summer. We had several "set-backs" this year, but things always worked out for the better. I didn't write this to brag. Nor is it to make everyone having a bad year feel worse. It's to let those guys know that the best year might be the next one. Keep the faith, and remember what got you into this profession in the first place. Good, bad, or in between, we all still love this way of life. God bless all, He sure did bless me. Bill

I don't farm, retired and live on a twenty acre portion with the homestead and buildings, but, thankfully we've had just about perfect weather, a good rain every week or so, and the whole county looks beautiful, soy beans and corn are doing great all around my garden has done wonderfully well, except for working me to death picking stuff, and this old 1865 place is a fantastic place to live. All told, we're doing very well, and the best to all you folks for whom it hasnt been all that great. I hadn't realized how well we're doing, relatively, until now.

Not doing to bad. Got the house finished and we're still together hee-hee!

Crop wise did real well despite late planting. Had way to much rain earlier and then June it all stopped. Managed to get it all in and put up before the critters and this SOAKING DAILY rain.

I am typing this so I am on the right side of dirt!! Being on the right side of the dirt makes it a good day and GREAT year for me.

For the others and their losses, sorry to hear that and keep the faith. I have not lost my dad yet but it will be a solemn yr when that day comes. God bless each of you and yours.

No, my Dad was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer in Feb. he passed away Aug. 12 the day after the funeral we had 6 inches of rain in a couple hours so that washed out my culvert pipe where I cross the creek to go home, last week I was putting rip-rap around the ends of the new pipe I installed, got done and was getting off the backhoe and slipped and fell off instead, twisted my ankle the worst my doctor said he ever saw for it not to be broke, but thru it all I remember that God said he would not put more on you than you could bear, so He must know something about me that I dont, got plenty of work to do when I'm able to get back to it, mabye the year will be better from here on out.

Well we all have things to look back on. My Father died when I was eleven years old. A fire came thru our place and allmost burned it all down. I fell off the roof and broke my foot putting a sprinkler up during the fire. We have only had about 6 inches of rain in 2 years. I would love to see a gulley washer right now! Fire Season is at it's worst in 50 + years. They say problems come in threes but I have had a few more in a row. I am very happy that my family is heathy and together. It was a nice day today and could allways be worst. Mark H.

I'm really sorry to hear about your father. I lost mine about 2 years ago. We were "best friends" besides being father and son. I had a conversation with him only hours before he passed. He always knew just the right thing to say. He knew that he was about to go. He told me that not everyone has a father or mother that they'll miss when they are gone. Just be thankful that you have one that you miss so much. Life throws tests at us all the time. Just keep the faith, and don't let your problems get you too down. I think about my dad every day. I know that he is looking down on me and smiling. He was the hardest working man I've ever met. Now it's my turn to do what he taught me. Be strong, and be the son he can be proud of. Something tells me you already are.

We're having a great year for crops, but not enough to make up for 6 cent (US) cull cows.

Still employed with the same cheap %$#&^% as last year. Im healthy - so is the wife and my 2 year old boy. My wifes career is doing good, mine not great. But that is what happens when free trade is allowed to run rampant with jobs going to China. I would like to see the job market get better. Still believe in Almighty GOD and ask for Wisdom and Knowledge every day.

More green pasture than my sheep can keep up with, had to mow twice this year, may have to mow again.

Old hay supplier got out of the business, found a new one, closer, cheaper, and better hay.

Got mad and quit my old job, two weeks later found a new one that I like even better.

Awful wet cold Spring, latest I've EVER put a garden in, first year to harvest strawberries, bumper crop, no diseases. Raspberries did real well too. Potato bugs worst they've ever been, but the taters are surviving, and the carrots are looking GREAT.

I'm healthy as a horse, whole family is healthy, and we're keeping up with the bills.

Yep, all in all, a pretty dang good year.

Good on ya! Up here BSE struck, we're busy feeding grasshoppers, the rain's been spotty and the heat wilting but hey, that's farming! We still put some crop in the bin and feed in the yard using mostly equipment from the 50's, 60's and 70's. I'm grateful every morning I wakeup for my little piece of the Planet. I feel blessed to be able to do what I love doing. Now, if only there was any money in it ... Actually, I believe if you're in farming for the money, you're likely in it for the wrong reason. Take care and God bless.

Central Minnesota - no rain since July 12.
Most corn is brown, even the weeds are wilting.
I heard the alarm clock this morning, I guess things are still good.

Since I never expected to live this long, it's been a good year just being around to watch it. It's all in the attitude.

Hey Indydirtfarmer, I am about 80 miles SW of Indy and your report sounds about like mine. I posted nearly the same sorta message on another forum. We started out in a rough farming year this spring, but then God blessed us with all the right weather so far! By my calculations I may well be in the 70+ bpa range of soybeans... {and God just blessed us a few minutes ago with a rain that will help fill all these flat pods!}

I empathize (and pray) for those that are needing rain... or had too much! That was me last year!!! But this is about the best crop year that I have had in 20 years of farming... and I need it to pay off all the money that I still owe from last year. Last year was about the worst year I had in 20 years... So I s'pose it all works out to 'bout average.

I have done a lot of talking to/with God in the last few years... and yet, he still gives me what I need, not what I want! To God be the Glory!!!

I am guessing I am farther north than you and we had a good start to the year weather wise then it didn't rain for a few weeks and started to put a hurt on. Got an inch finally in the beginning of the week and it rained 1/10 last night and another 2/10 while I was milking this morning and is just now letting up. So I suppose it hasn't been too bad but 2 more rains a week ago and a week before that and we would have problems of another kind, the good kind where ya have too much corn for the bins!

Last night we got about 1/2 inch, and outside of a couple of sprinkles it's the first rain we've had around here (just west of Kansas City) since June 25th. Combined with the 100 plus temperatures for the last three weeks things are kinda dusty and ugly. Did have a fair wheat crop as we got rain earlier this year, but the corn and soybeans are really in tough shape. A lot of the corn around here has been cut for sileage and I'm not sure the soybeans will recover even if we do get good rain from here on out. Trees are dropping their leaves, everything is brown. Our pond is down about 6 feet, with just a small pool of water left in the bottom. Last couple of years have been almost as bad. I'm praying it will soon turn around and we'll have a couple of good years around here. Would appreciate your prayers as well.
