I am considering purchase of a 52 8N as a toy to keep and play with at my cabin. What should I look for in an original 8N. I found one, all orig. 6v, with 3 implements (bush, aug. & rear blade) for $2800. Ser # is definitely an 8N. Runs strong, no smoke or leaks. Lights do not work. Everything else okay, needs paint, orig. grill & frt. bump.
What is the shift lever for, located below the seat, on left side of the rear axle/trans? Something to do with the pto? Were there two kinds of pto's or transmissions available on a 52? Would I be better off with a 53, on up that has a live pto? And what the heck is the diff between a reg. and live pto? Thanks, Just Learning

Go to the site I have linked. Click on "FAQs". When you get there, click on "Buying an 8N". There is a very good list of things to look for and check before buying.

All 8N's had a 4 speed transmission with non-live hydraulics and non-live pto. Many thousands are still doing the job even with those limitations. The best thing to do is evaluate what you need the tractor for and then buy a tractor that meets those needs. Many people use an 8N to bushhog and get by just fine with an ORC to compensate for the lack of live pto.

The price sounds OK, the lever is to engage the pto which must be running to use the lift, the pto shaft turns the hydraulic pump, there were over/under drive transmissions available as an option, neither the N-series or the '53 Jubilee had live pto, however the '53 and up had live hydraulics meaning that the lift would work anytime the engine is running regardless of pto shaft turning or clutch pedal depressed, these tractors had the hyd. pump driven off the engine, regular or non-live pto means the shaft only turns when the clutch is not depressed, push the clutch pedal in and the pto stops, live pto generally uses two clutch plates it allows you to stop the tractor movement while the pto still turns, depress the clutch pedal halfway to stop tractor movement, fully depress to stop pto.
