I'm looking to get either a Ford 4000 or Massey 165 (or other comparable) used tractor. I have heard the masseys are known for hydraulic problems. Any input on that?

I have a MF 147 and had a 178 before. I had to repair the 178 one time, and it wasn't cheap. That was at 14000 working hours. Now the 147 have now 14000 hours too and i never had any problem with the hydraulic. The only "problem" is that is very slow to use the remotes.
I'll choose MF before Ford.

Good Luck

the series that contained the 1085 MF have a history of hydraulic problems dealing with a control valve sticking. in many cases the tractor has to be seperated to repair. i've been told this by three MF dealers while investigating my own 1085 hydraulic failure. i used recomended oil.

You say recommended, but what brand did you use? Interested since I have a MF.

Just check the tractor you're looking at, and if it's OK, don't worry about a thing. Ferguson, and then Massey-Ferguson, built as good a small and mid-sized tractor as anyone. They were extremely popular. They still are. There are so many still running, that most people looking for this size tractor, end up buying Massey's. That leads to a lot of "first time tractor buyers" getting these gems. That in turn, leads to them being abused, and misused. Then they want to blame the tractor. I have seen a bunch of these tractors with thousands of hours on them, with little or no trouble. The 135, 150, 165, and 175 Massey's are just about as good a tractor as anyone ever made. (And that is from a guy that bleeds green!) Every tractor ever built has it's "most common problem". The Massey Ferguson 100 series "problem" is that it has lasted to the point where they are getting "relatively in-expensive" compared to newer tractors, so the ones still around are falling into the hands of people that hammer the daylights out of them, and then don't take care of them. Just wait untill the tractors being built today, get to be 25 or 30 years old. Most of them will be too expensive to fix, and will not be around to see the day when they are "cheap used tractors". Just my opinion. (And that of millions of others)

Jay, Remember that when Harry Ferguson and Ford Tractor went their separate ways, it was the Ferguson system, essentially unchanged that Ford used in the new Fords. Later, they ended up paying Ferguson about $10 million for stealing his system. Not much money compared to the value of what they stole. Both tractors have great hyd. systems when properly used and maintained. And Big Dean is always right! Jim

A lot of time someone will buy one that has been neglected abused and has several hours on it and wore out when they get it & of course then they start telling everyone the Massey brand has a problem with this and that. I was Massey Ferguson mechanic for 27 years & know of several tractors with over 10,000 hours that have never had a hydraulic problem.

i worked for a massey dealer for years and if they did or do have hyd.problems it's because of owner neglect or some one trying to save two cents and NOT using the right oil in the trans-hyd. system.the junk that some will do is just unreal but it is always the d-- tractor that is bad never the owner. believe me i have seen it all

Well said, Marlowe. People buy and expensive tractor, then won't buy the manuals, and then go to WalMart or Tractor Supply and buy off brand hydrolic/trans oil. Then cry when everything starts going wrong.
