My dad has a 1941 "A" John Deer that he has completed restoration on receiently. He replaced the original governor with a good (so the seller says)governor mechanism. The A idels fine but when you advance the throttle any amount the RPMs climb out-of-control like there is no end in sight.
Dad believes the problem is in the mechanics of the governor. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, William Almy

Will, I didnt have to pull the whole governor to correct the problem just took the cover off on the left side and pulled the gear and shaft out the side. Be careful not drop any of the back bearing in the crankcase which did happen to me. I ended up taking the top crankcase cover off and went fishing with a magnet.

I just had that happen to me on a 730. I didnt get the fingers of the weights in the right groove. I had them in between the spool and they need to be between the gear and the end of the spool. She really wound out like she had no end and even ground some lead off the weights. The manual doesnt show how it goes back together, so you have to watch how it comes apart. Oh well live and learn.

or it is not mounted properly or the linkage is binding. what was wrong with the original gov? I ignore your "mechanic" and go back to it.
