While going through my great aunt's stuff after she passed away we ran across a owners manual/parts diagram for a Townsend Tractor. On the cover it says manufactured in Janesville WI but noone remembers that, only the Samson factory which is now General Motors. I have searched the web but only found one picture but no history or specs on the tractor. Does any of you know any history??

Hi. I am the great grandson of Roy C. Townsend Sr., the man responsible for the line of Townsend oil tractors. He lived to be 103, and had a long list of patents under his belt. The history I've read in this discussion so far is correct, from what I've learned from my grandfather, who is now 91.I'd be very interested to see a scanned image of the manual if that's possible.

I've been in contact with a father and son team that shows a Townsend tractor throughout the Midwest. If I find more info, I'll post it here.

Tyler, Sorry I didn't check the followups on the Townsend Tractor sooner. Can you find out where in Janesville the factory was, it'd be interesting to see if the building is still there. Let me know your e-mail so I can send you the scanned copies of the manual. Aaron

In 1914 the Townsend Mfg. Co., Janesville, WI, began producing a tractor powered by a gas engine. This was one of the last gas tractors to retain the outward appearance of a steam traction engine. The company was later taken over by the LaCrosse Boiler Company, LaCrosse, WI.In 1915 they produced the LaCrosse(Happy Farmer). They showed the Lacrosse model M for the first time at the Wichita, Kansas Power Farming show in 1919. I have no more information after this date.
