Massey Diesel Fuel Problem?

MF 245 Diesel loses power and comes to a stop after about an hour of brush hogging. Doesn't appear to be overheating, just slows somewhat gradually and shuts down. Let it sit for a while...1-4 hours...and it starts right up again.

It's my friends tractor...mechanics keep pointing him at electrical wiring problems. I know nothing about tractors, and even less about diesels, but it sure acts like a fuel problem to me.

Where should I look first? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys...I appreciate the input! You confirmed my suspicions--with what little I know about diesels I thought once you got 'em turnin' they were difficult to stop without removing fuel from the equation! I'll get out there tomorrow and see what I can figure out!

I'll post a follow up.

IF it stops and starts on the key, check for volts on the fuel solenoid. No volts will be electrical problem If supply is there, remove solenoid, carefully remove cut-off plunger and replace solenoid body. LEAVE THE POWER SUPPLY DISCONNECTED. May need bleeding, but then engine will only stop by stalling out, or the fuel fault (other than the shut off solenoid). That should determine if its electrical or not. If it doesn't normally stop on-the-key, it ain't electrical.

We had the same problem on our 670 last year and there was crud that built up in the tank and would loose power then shut down after about 10 minutes cleaned the tank and has run fine ever since. good luck.

Simplest things first, then start tearing into the fuel system. Next time it starts to lose power, reach up and unscrew the fuel cap on the tank. It sure sounds like the vent is plugged, and its building up a vacuum in the tank as fuel is used. As to those "mechanics" who think its an electrical problem, one wonders just what kind of stuff would they be able to fix?

Well, don't listen to the mechanics who are pointing to electrical problems. Don't they know it's a diesel for Pete's sake? They run just fine with no electrical system at all! (Unless it's got one of those new fangled injector pumps with electrical shut off solenoids and such. But that's unlikely). Mostly it's one of two things that will cause a diesel to quit when you didn't ask it to. First, is a constriction or blockage in the fuel system. The injector pump has some very small passages that won't tolerate any particulate matter floating in your fuel. The best place to start looking is the filters as the previous gents said. Too often, those things aren't changed for years at a time. If you change the filters, you should also blow out all the fuel lines with compressed air. Make sure there's no loose crap floating around waiting for a place to lodge. Be sure to check the top of the injectors when you remove the fuel lines. Small debris can get trapped in there and intermittently keep fuel from opening the injector. The second reason diesels shut down unexpectedly is if air is somehow introduced into the system. As you probably know, the injector pump puts the fuel up at very high pressure( over a thousand psi in most systems). Trapped air in the injector lines will compress with each stroke of the pump, so the fuel stops moving and doesn't open the injectors. When the tractor is running and at operating temp., look very carefully at all fuel connections and joints to see if any fuel is leaking out in any quantity at all. If fuel can get out, air can get in. Hope you find the problem and it's a smallone. GOOD LUCK, Jim

Just went thru this with Long 260 diesel. Rubber fuel line was self-destructing inside, Making fuzzy, hair-like stuff that finally clogged the fuel pump & banjo fitting. It would shut down when running, then be hard to impossible to start while hot, cool down & easy start & run hour or 2, then quit again. Blew out lines & ran fine. Will replace line next break we get from hayfield.

Take off the fuel filters drain filters into a pan or bucket look to see if there is a brown scum or a milky slime in the filters that will tell you if you have a bacteria or fungus in you'r system. how old is the fuel? if you have no scum or slime in filters or tank then fill the filters with fresh fuel and install. If the fuel is old and redish brown in color best to drain and flush entire system hopes this helps ..... ..Jer

Check fuel filters, if not sure change anyway. System will have to be purged of air afterwards.

I know very little about Masseys, but from what you describe, I would suspect a fuel restriction of some sort, maybe a foreign object in the tank, or restricted vent hole.
Just a thought.
