Just got the AC working on my IH 186 and converted to 134. Gauge pressure was running quite high as I understand it often does with 134. Over 90 deg outside, the pressure cutout activates, presumably from high pressure. Shut off AC for a second and turn it back on and it works for a few minutes before cutting out again. Thought about just over-riding this switch and taking a chance on a blown hose. Any ideas? Hate to switch back to R12 since it is so expensive. Also, replaced a hose and mechanic said it had some rusty water in it. Replaced drier but not expansion valve. Thanks

I have changed over a few and had to replace the switches with a 134 retrofit switches and it worked ok. This changes the cycling times and pressures.

There are other alternatives to R12. Some replacements like enviro-safe do not require a liscense. They are lower pressure and cost about $8.00 per can.

It's true 134 will have higher pressure than 12, but not alot mabye 30 to 50 psi on the high side, dont by-pass the switch it's protecting the compressor not the hoses, sounds like a new expansion valve and a good system flush would be in order, dont flush thru the expansion valve, drier or compressor.

I have had faulty pressure switches that cut out way too early, What pressure is it cutting out at? have you got a clean condenser? It's not over charged is it. I drop 134 straight into old cars for mates with out a flush ,filter or oil change and never had a problem.

Not sure how high the pressure was - the mechanic said it was way high - he was afraid it would blow out something. I could ask him. Based on that I figured the cutout was working okay.

Thanks;

Brian

Brian, I re-read your first post and the "rusty water" comment is a real worry, I must have missed it the other night. I think a flush and another drier, new oil is a must. Maybe a new tx valve. The slightest bit of moisture could stuff everything up. Your system now could have moisture in it which when heats vapourizes and takes up space in the condenser causing high head pressure. If your mechanic can't flush it, try putting it on a vacume pump for a long time. Jeff
