I'm looking for a tractor that keeps on going like the Duracell bunny. Which tractor models, under medium load, have piled up 10000 or 20000 hours or more with minimal maintenance?

Somewhere's I read an article about a fleet of Cat Challengers that racked up over 30,000 hrs on them. It seems like all but two had only routine maintaince and the others were tore down completely and they all met factory specs to go out the door! Now that was engine, tranny, and rearends. Now THAT is impressive. If I can find the article I will scan it up.

The Essex Tri-Directional is the way to go, but they are awfully hard to find.

Look no further my good friend than the elusive (but still available in BOsnia) than the infamous &#% (sorry, but I am not allowed to say it). Apparently they have a lifespan that is measured in light years. John Deere fans, eat your heart out.

Now Rufus, you should know that a light year is not a measure of time but of distance. I'm disappointed.

Surely you jest! Did you not know that in Bosnia (especially on the pineapple plantations) that a light year is in fact a measure of time? You really shoul've known !!!

We have a Case 1270 with over 15000 hrs and only had to rebuild the engine once and had a tooth come off the sun gear which ate up another of the sun gears. Was an easy fix and didn't cost much at all.

We have a 1967 IH 656 with WAY OVER 15,000 hrs and thats on a GAS! The engine was overhauled once by an idiot and was immediately tore down again (less then 500 hrs) at about 7000-7500 hours. The TA and clutch where replaced at about 10,000 hours. It pulled a 56 6 row planter and did all the cultivating until 1981 and also did nearly all the baling in that time frame also. Now its main duty is pulling a swather and small square baler. The hydraulics have whined since day one and still work fine.

First off, what are you going to be doing with this tractor? How big do you need to go? That will narrow the search somewhat. The problem with your "wish" is that any tractor that has been around long enough to prove itself for 10000 hours is already worn out. What you need is a tractor in the early stages of its life. If you can find a model that is a proven "endurance champion" and doesn't have a ton of hours, you may be alright. I would stay with a brand that is still active. No orphan tractors. You MIGHT have to work on it some day. You'll need parts. There is no way to be sure that yours will go 10000 hours, just because someone else did it with theirs. There are a number of good tractors around, that were built in the last few years. If you plan on keeping it for life, start with something relatively new. That 40 year old Oliver will be ancient in another 25 years. If you are after a smaller tractor, (30-40 HP) chances are good that you'l find one that isn't too worn out, and a few years old. The bigger tractors, (100+ HP) were bought to work hard. You won't find many 4840 John Deere's around that were only used to cut grass. They have worked long and hard. Define your needs in a tractor, and we'll be glad to help you with BETTER advise. Hope this is of some help, Bill

The Oliver 1650 and 1655 and The White 100 thru 185 will go over 10,000 hours with good care. A couple of AGCO-Allis 9150 tractors used to work a race track each had over 25000 hours with normal maintenance. I think a lot of tractors will perform to your satisfaction with proper care.

Pretty slim pickens methinks.First, most working tractors spent their early life at more than medium load, hence the ongoing demand for bigger tractors, secondly thats kinda like seeking a car that has gone 600,000-1,200,000 miles without major repairs(ie:cruising at 60,60 mi per hrs use).Thirdly tractor type engines are capable of several rebuilds if cared for, proofmeter hrs mean little unless you know the full history of the tractor.Look around at what 30s,40s,50s,60s tractors are still"working tractors" and you will find them in every color & size.Pick the color and features you like with mind on popularity/parts availability.

Probably NONE. But, I'd guess a 3020 or 4020 John Deere would come as close as any. IMHO

JD 3020. Neighbor has a 3020 that he swears has 20,000 plus hours. Regular oil changes, plus it was his no. three tractor.4620 then 4020 THEN 3020. He's not a braggardly type guy; pretty matter of fact about things. Mguy.

3020's sure didn't have that reputation where I came from..... about 20 miles from Moline.... In fact 4020's didn't last that long either, diesel's were majored at 3000-4000 hrs, gas about 2000-2500. 3020's 1000-1500 hrs less than that. I hear the Case/IH Magnum's with the 8.3L Cummins are holding up well in some applications with 15,000 to 20,000 hours with nothing other than maintenance. Hourmeters are the best thing ever been put on equip. As long as You keep them working!

There's an awful lot of old Fords in operation, of course they made an awful lot of 'em.

Yes they did. 800,000+ of the 9/2/8N's alone. Ford built a lot of them because people bought a lot of them. There's no way to tell of course, but it's estimated that half are still running, many without major rebuilds. If a 9N was sold in 1939, and is still running today, if you give it only an average useage of 1 hour a day, that's still over 23,000 hours of service. Not bad.
