I am building a trailer and went out and bought two ,4 wire light's,both lights have two wires coming out ...a black and a red..[the light's metal base is used as ground ]. there was no wiring diagram..Is there an easy way to wire up the lights from a 1989 GMC truck?

I have found it most easy to get the wire harness that will plug into your tailight harness connector. It unplugs near rear of box, you put in the adapter and then get the jumper connector you want from that to the bumper area. Most guys use the flat 4-wire connector if no brakes on trailer. If brakes, you'll need a six or seven wire and more than the light connector I mention to use. Buy that 4 color wire for trailers at most auto or hardware stores. It has the green/brown,yellow and white ground. Some kits split it even and run down both sides of trailer if needed. It usually has the 4-wire connector on it and one for truck too. OR, just buy the wire and whatever end you wish to use for it. Instructions with it usually tell which color wire to use for what. Brown is tail/clearance and others are for turn/brakes. It's not that hard, most kits use the GM colors now days.

Who, in their right mind, would build a trailer without brakes? unless it is a small trailer for a golf cart, or riding lawnmower.

I have seldom seen a home made trailer with brakes. Hauled over 8 or 9 ton loads with a 3/4 ton pickup with no trailer brakes. But I drive like an old man, not a suv driver.

This really isn't on topic with this post but just a heads up on chebby truck factory trailering package plug-in harness for the brake controller.

I bought a 2003 K2500HD & tried to use the brake controller & harness from my 2002 K2500. Plugged right and seemed ok but when the headlights were turned on the trailer brakes locked up & released when turned off. Reading out the socket, it was obvious that the vehicles are wired different.

Got a 2003 harness from GM (p/n 15085418) and it works good now. New plug is white. 2002 & earlier (last 4 digits of p/n 6884) has a brown plug.

So be careful, you may think everthing is fine until it gets dark.

Just be thankful that the brakes ended up hooked to the headlights, and not the turn signals!

Boy I here that. The trailer was empty but still quite a thrill with those automatic headlights popping on well before sunset.

Joe,
Thanks for the heads up--I worked at the local GM dealership for several years right up until October of last year, I kind of wonder how many techs have had a peed off customer with this one?!? Why would GM change something like that I wonder? Oh well, guess we know now. Thanks

GROUND. Everything. Well. Ground your lights at the light. Try to get "metal to metal" with the ground. Connect a ground wire to a point near the front of the trailor. Run that through the truck/trailor plug, and ground "metal to metal" on the truck. This is real important to get right if you have electric brakes in the wiring. This keeps correct polarity on your ground.

the black is tail/marker...the red is stop/turn
yellow in the harness is l. turn the green is r. turn black is tail/ marker and the white is ground. you'll have less ground problems if you run the white wire to the base of your lights and ground the truck side VERY well
