Painting my tractor...general questions

I purchased a nice running/working tractor, but cosmetically not so good. Thinking about using a pressure washer to clean and loosen old paint. Any thoughts on this?

Also, after sheet metal is off, it seems that most tractors have almost everything shot with paint, including hydraulic hoses, etc. Is this common? On my international, it looks as if everything under the sheet metal was red!

Thanks,
Tim

Absolutely use a presure washer, but first, get several cans of EZ-Off oven cleaner and spray it all over everything that is not aluminum (watch the ID tags). Wait a day, then pressure wash and most of the paint and grease will come off.

The "typical" paint job you describe is done when new paint is wanted, but zero restoration first. Just paint over everything. If you are going to be disassembling the tractor to restore it, you will be painting the pieces in stages before reassembly and won't suffer the look given to the quick and dirty job.

Great advice....not going for a restoration by any means, just want to protect the metal, and make it look a bit better. Right now it just looks old and worn.

I figure that is what has been done to many I looked at, that were significantly more expensive, and not quite the same tractor.
