Does this smell fishy to you?

I have a vehicle listed for sale on an automobile classified ad site(note to moderator: this post is not an ad). I received an e-mail today that said the following:

"HELLO, WE HAVE A CLIENT INTRESTED IN BUYING YOUR (vehicle year, make, and model) I WILL NEED YOU TO PROVIDE ME WITH THE COST. THE SHIPPING TO SOUTH-WEST LONDON(ENGLAND) WILL BE HIS RESPONSIBILITY. PLEASE RESPOND ASAP. DAN FOSTER"

This smells like those African deals that want someone to ship a tractor over there. The e-mail address doesn't look fake. Given the fact that I've had little interest from potential buyers, I'm not sure what to make of it; my first inclination is that it is a scam. I'd think that if someone overseas was serious about buying it, they'd do the planning and customs work on getting it over there, not me - after all, they'd be the ones paying for it.

What do you think? Should I reply to it? If I did, I'd tell them that doing the shipping legwork is their responsibility, not mine. I should add that the e-mail makes no mention of a company representing the buyer or a contact phone number. Opinions?

Go ahead and shoot him a price. It sounds like someone is trying to earn a finders fee from a potential buyer. Don't give any account numbers.

Good Luck,

Terry H

After I posted the question, I found a site that does background traces on e-mails. I ran the message through the site and guess where it came from? Nigeria. It looks like this is a new variation on an old scam.

Thanks, guys!

In case anyone is interested on how to check e-mails, go to www.spamcop.net.

The message he wrote makes it stink like a rotting tuna. I'm sure it's a scam. If it was a real offer, it would have been written as one, discussing the need to talk about transportation, and wanting more information about the equipment.

Hard to say for sure. I have sold several tractor and antique agricultural items to buyers in England. There are a lot of collectors there. They even arranged the shipping with pick-up right where the tractor stood. As always, the payment was received in certified funds long before pick-up. There were NO request for "extra" cash or other crap that comes in most of the fake ads. I've received my share of them, too. My thought is that if it's too good to be true, it ain't! Good luck, and happy tractoring. G, (upstate, NY)

I got one the other day saying he was a doctor from South Sfrica and he wanted to buy the fuel injection unit I posted for sale more than 2 months ago on the classic truck parts ad forum as a gift for his son. He gave some very foggy financial giuides as to how he would be paying through friends here in the U.S. I asked him to provide me with his e-mail address, so I could forward it to the U.S.Treasury Fraud Unit,(is there one?) for verification, and have heard no more from him. Was this to be a quick hit on a dumb redneck? Gene

If vehicle is of a type/value that would make transaction feasible,it is possible some well to do Brit has contracted a firm to seek one for him, however the lack of information as to the name of the firm etc makes it sound bogus. You could request more information and references by email, before proceeding further.Reading the message it appears they want a"cost"(firm price) on the vehicle, nothing more. You really have nothing to lose at this time.
If suspicious read the notice Kim has posted at bottom of Ads boards here. There is an FBI contact link there I believe.

I had a similar experience a couple yrs back with a motor home.Subject contacted me in response to ad,and wanted test drive, specs, said money was on hand etc...turned out to be a "broker" who wanted to take it for free and put it on his out of state lot for comission sale.

Just make sure the money is in your hand before the car is on the boat. Can't lose much that way.

Make 100% sure the check has cleared the bank & the money _truely_ is in hand. That is the gimick - they make really good bogus checks that take a long, long time to clear all the banks it passes through - all of a sudden your bank calls weeks later & says you gave them a bad check.....

He TOLD you that the client would bear the burden fo shipping, did'nt he(the lawyer or whatever)? Make him a helluva price and see what happens.Maybe your p.o.s. vehicle is what's really HOT in London right now and he can move it for big cash gain in his favor. Don't be so skeptical. Investigate. They have asked for nothing more than a price. Check 'em out, dude. Mguy.
