I need your help! I'm trying to put on an antique tractor show as part of a county fair. I would like to see 10-20 tractors on display. What categories should I give out prizes for? How much should I charge for entries? It's a weekend fair so should I have the tractors on display the entire time or just on the main day, Saturday? How many judges should I have? Any tips on scoring? Should I try and include tractor driving skills? What about a small parade around the main rink? What years should I include - pre 1975? Thanks for your help.

Thanks so much for your input. We'll have no entry fees or prizes. The tractors will be paraded around the rink with the PA announcer telling about the owner and the tractor. I'll try to come up with some tractor games, but I'll probably just stick to the show for this year. I hope some folks will showcase working equipment as part of their display.

The event will be held in Fulton County, Kentucky.

Thanks and take care, Lynn

It'll be held in Cayce, Kentucky on August 23. Cayce is located in Fulton County, Kentucky which is in far, I mean far, Western Kentucky. We'd love to have you here for the show. Take care, Lynn

Totally agree. I don't see any need for judging, prizes or an entry fee. If you can get away with it, I'd even try to avoid an entrance fee for visitors, too. New shows normally aren't money-makers.

My dad and I have made a habit of attending newer, smaller shows over the past ten years, instead of just our old favorites, and we really enjoy it. It feels good to help a new show get off the ground.

Working exhibits are always more interesting than static exhibits, and parades are nice. You don't need too many activities, though, because half the fun of a tractor show is standing around shooting the breeze.

Good luck with your show.

these guys all have the right idea. ive attended tractor shows that were an abysmal failure because too many people wouldn't leave their equipment overnite, or based on previous occasions, didnt think the display would attract a crowd.

it would also be a good idea to have a small parade. if you have a PA system there, get tractor owners to fill out a card w/ year/make/model and any points of interest about their tractor like :when it was restored, how long its been in the family, or whatever interesting story the owner has about it. (just leave it as a "comments" section on the card. people will get the hint.)

just have them line up and pass by the grandstand or wherever your microphone is and let them hand you the cards as they pass by.

good luck!

I agree with the two below. I just had my second tractor show this past Saturday. There was no judging. I had some prizes donated by the local Carquest store to give away so I had a little poker run.
Just be grateful that people are willing to come and bring their machines. See if you can get some working demonstrations. We had a dump hay rake in action, an old stationary baler, a cordwood saw, a wood splitter and a planer. Whenever those things were working, that's where the crowd was. Pretty, restored tractors all lined up are nice but the more action you can have the better. We also had a parade which was great fun and a couple of us had trailers to give kids rides around the field and the campground.
I was going to have a "slow" race but never got around to it. Also a barrel chase went by the wayside. Just not enough time in the day to do it all. All this with about 30 tractors plus old cars, implements, etc.
Oh yeah, we also had a band playing music at the end of the day. Old time stuff, of course.
Good luck. The more of these kinds of events we can get going, the better.
Where are you located?

My 2 Cents..Don't judge the tractors, Don't Charge an entry fee, the people bringing the tractors have enough expense and trouble just bringing them there. We give a small gift generally donated, to all that bring tractors for their trouble and interest. Generally just show on the main day, cuts down vandalism. Russ

There should be no prizes, and there should be no entry fee. A parade would be nice, as well as some tractor games. If the tractor show is advertised as being all 3 days, then whoever puts a tractor in it should be required to be there all three days. If you only want to do it for one day, then advertise it as such. I have been very dissapointed more than once because I attended a tractor show which was advertised as running for 3 days, and the only day I could attend was the 3rd day, and everybody had already loaded up and gone home.
