third party image

I searched the web and looked at a hundred pictures and finally decided that I needed to go to the group with the answers!! This plant has been a pain for years and now that the yard was torn up putting in a septic system it has taken over! I know that 2,4-D will take care of it but I have to wait for my new grass to get a little stronger before I spray. More than anything though I want to know what it is. The plant has a lot of water in it, shiny leaves, will root from cuttings (making it an easy to spread, hard to kill pest in the garden)and looks like it should be a water plant not a yard plant.

Thanks in advance,
Lance

Lance,,

In case you didn't read it in your searching,, this plant is very good to eat.. It is good in salad or scrambled with eggs.. In Spanish it is called Verdulaga and Mexican people love it. Just because we call the a weed doesn't mean they're not good to eat.. Much like pigweed, I think it's better than spinach.. Give it a try..

I have sprayed, dug, plowed, rototilled and otherwise killed off pigweed, but never heard of anyone that eats the stuff. Do you prepare it just like spinach and are the leaves the part you eat?

Hi Dan,

Pick the pigweed when it's young and tender. They seem to do well in my garden and I let a patch grow,, comes up thick as hair on a dog.. Then I pull them when about 3 or 4" high. Wash them and cook roots and all, like you would beet tops or spinach.. They are very good.. Don't let them get too big,, they get woody and tough.. Give em a try..

Lance, I claim no expertise in identifying weeds, but from the picture it could be common purslane (portulaca oleracea)..... ..

You got it, looked it up and that's what it is, now I know the bad guy by his name! Thanks for the quick response! I knew I should have asked here first instead of wasting an hour trying to find it on the web! As had been said many times before, a wealth of knowlage here at this site!

Thanks,
Lance

Purslane is a bad weed in the garden. It likes warm weather. It has a zillion seeds and the seeds last for a 1,000 years. The cuttings will re-grow if they are anywhere near the soil. When it first showed up on our place, it came with some of the wife's flowers. We did not do anything a bout it for a few hours and then it was everywhere and most will be here for ever.

C'mon Fred, you're exagerratomg somewhat. It only had a million seeds and lasts for 700 years. Meanwhile, I gotta get out and dig out some weeds out of the garden.
