Do you guys take down payments on tractor? Seems
like everytime I take a down payment the guy either wants his money back,or you have to hunt
him down to get him to pick the tractor up.They
say in a week or two and a month later the tractor
is still setting here.I've had two people last year who left $100 deposits and never came back.
I got 100 bucks, but it cost more than that to
resell it.I usually say I don't take payments,
all or nothing, and I've had a few people leave.
Guess they didn't have the money to start with.

i have bought many tractors by making a downpayment with a personal check (usually 30 - 50% of selling price). balance in cash the day of the pickup(after the check has cleared the bank). but to have a good deal both people have to be happy. and you are right, alot of times i don't have enough money to purchase the tractor outright (not without shifting money from one account to another) so it helps me if a seller will wait till the end of the month for the cash balance. but clearly its their tractor they can control the deal. why does it cost you more than a $100 to sell a tractor? around here you place a free add and receive a dozen call the day its published.

I don't have much luck on the internet, yes you
do get a lot of response, but not many buyers, most
are looking for something underpriced.I have better luck in the Heavy equipment trader which is
around $80 for a photo add and around $20 for
most farm paper adds. The majority of tractor
buyers don't have computers.

I have 3 plans: 1; CASH 2: CHECK 3: OR FORGET IT! Works very well in almost every case!

Sure I take downpayments. And I hold them to the letter of the law. The downpayment is non-refundable, and good only for a limited time, I usually specify 10 days.

It's stopped some people cold who thought they could loan me 20 bucks and tie me and my item up indefinately for free. It's also clinched some folks in who weren't sure they wanted to commit.

I have actually never sold a tractor, only bought them! But I have sold many other things, including lots of cars and trucks of various values. I have also bought a couple of hundred of them. I often have made deals both ways on vehicles in which I either leave a $100 check or have accepted $100 checks to hold the vehicle in question for 24 hours. I always have a written and signed sales agreement that the negotiated price will be payed in full the next day in cash or local cashier's check. The next day the money changes hands, as does the vehicle, and the $100 check goes back to the writer. I always write in the agreement that if the full amount is not payed in the agreed upon 24 hours, that the $100 check belongs to the seller. I have never lost my $100 and have never collected anyone else's $100 in such a deal. They have always worked out fine and I have protected a number of good deals in this way.

I just plain will not accept a personal check from anyone I don't know for much of anything. Too much experience with bad checks in a former job.... Any more, it is almost impossible to get a criminal prosecution on a single check, and any civil lawsuit would cost more than the value of anything I have ever sold. So no personal checks. Period!

I would say that it depends on the price of the tractor. If it is a $300 tractor than 100%. But if it is a $4000 tractor than I would say that a 25% deposit would make them come back. Plus you have to lay out some ground rules if you want the tractor gone in a certain time period. Take their down payment and say that if you haven't heard from them in 4 to 5 weeks then the tractor goes back on the market. (It would be best to have it in writing but I hate turning tractor deals into a legal exercise.)

I would question anyone who wants to leave a $100 deposit on a tractor worth less than a $1000. Do they not have the money? If so, than they can't afford the tractor, move on. Some people just get nervous giving a 100% deposit because you could sell the tractor to someone else and they are out the money.

This is just my opinion but I guess that is what you are looking for.

I probably make about $5,000 a year on handshake deals in which people "don't want to make it a legal exercise". A writing can be on a scrap of envelope or piece of brown paper sack (the middle layer of most paper feed sacks is not wax coated, and makes fine legal paper). Without the writing, the judge has to decide who's lying, and you can't assume he'll make the right decision.
