Well it is time to look for a new trailer. I am pulling with a 3/4 ton Chevy 4x4 and will be hauling a John Deere "60" and a Massey Harris 101 JR would like to be able to haul both at once, but that is not really necesary. Also thought a dump type trailer would be nice to have. I am not sure if I want bumper pull or gooseneck. What type trailer do you use and what do you like or dislike?

I pull a load trail 83"x20', 14000 gvw with a dodge 1500.
Have a cap, therefore a bumper pull. Use same hitch set-up as with travel trailer. Works fine.

I have an 18 FT tilt deck, and it is great. Has 2 6000 lb axles. I am going to build a 25 FT flatdeck with a 5th wheel hitch to go on my 49 Chevy 5-Window that has a 5th wheel already mounted on it. The new trailer will have a 5 FT beavertail on it that can be lowered as a ramp. I prefer the flat deck over a trailer with fenders, you can do so much more without the fenders in the way.

I don't have a pick-up or flatbed truck for a gooseneck. I do have a 2-1/2 ton truck though! Here is a picture of a couple of my tractors loaded up.

The trailer has a 25 foot deck and a 5 foot dovetail that cranks up to make a 30' flat. It is equiped with a pinle hook. Since we could get a lot of weight on the hitch I have a receiver rated for 16,000 pound tongue weight.

Dave,

Could you send me more pics of the trailer. That is almost exactly what I am going to build.

I have a goosneck 23flat + 5ft dovetail that I use for everything. It's has two 10k axles (8 tires). Pull it with my F250 Ford, and I wouldn't trade it for anything smaller. If you are gonna get one, go ahead and get all the bells and whistles on it, you won't regret it later. Mine has pop-up dove tail & flip-over ramps, that allow me to have a 28ft flat deck when loading hay, or I can use it as an equip hauler. If you are planning on hauling two tractors, don't go with anything smaller. Remember, even with 2-10k axles, you can't legally haul but little less than 14,000lbs. Trailer weighs about 6200 alone.

By the way, if you have ever driven down I-95 in North Carolina with two tractors on 14k gvw trailer, in 95 degree heat, you'd know why I love the 8 tires instead of 4. Busted 3 in one day.

And another thing, I have never pulled it, but a friend of mine has a gooseneck with 3axles under it, and he wishes he had bought one like mine. If he could find anyone around here to buy his, I'm sure he would purchase something different next time.

I bought a 26 ft gooseneck with dove tail and fold over ramps this spring. I sold the two bumper pulls (one was reg and one over the wheels flatbed). I'm glad I traded up. I would say this is the best kind for me as I can haul two tractors and a piece of equipment if I need. I have a low sitting bed as the wheel fenders are above the deck and one tractor sits great with back wheels between the trailer fenders. You definately need brakes on both axles and heavy axles. The two ramps cover the entire width of the trailer and I can load narrow fronts easily.

Hi willy,

What not too buy is a tri-axle tag trailer as they will reverse load hitch weight and no you can't load tongue heavy to stop it. There is no load sweet spot like on a tandum. I have not tried a GN tri-axle but I expect to see the same problems but just not as bad of a problem.

When considering a GN hitch, the flat plate hitch will cause the truck frame rails to flex. There's not enough hieght on the flat plate design to stop this from happening. Is this a problem? Apparently not as lot of GN use this type of hitching. It is a problem for me as I tend to keep my pick-ups for ever.

Buying trailers is just like buying trucks, always buy more than you need.

Don't be afraid of a goose-neck tri-axle; you will not have a problem with weight distribution. Have had a 32 ft cattle trailer for many years; in all honesty, I was looking for trailer with dual tandems (have got flat-bed like that)when I ran across this tri-axle; was a deal I couldn't pass up. Can tell no difference in the way the 2 trailers pull.....

Hi Thurlow,

Do me a favor and measure from your pin to center of your axle. Then give me your overall trailer length.

I'm curious :)

T_Bone; OA length of trailer is 38 1/2 ft; box (this is a cattle trailer) is 32 ft; trailer can be divided into as many as 4 compartments; don't think it's possible to distribute load so as to not track/drive right; center of hitch to middle axle is 28 ft. Lots of these tri-axles in my neck of the woods in either 28 or 32 ft (box)lengths. Flat beds are (nearly) all either single tandem or dual tandem, depending on load capacity. I would choose a tandem axle rather than tri- for a flat-bed. I've never messed up a tire, rim or bearings by turning too sharply, but that front axle has got to "scoot" and I try to be aware of curbs, etc. Suppose it's all in one's mind, but a pound of lead pulls heavier than a pound of feathers. The "sense" in pulling 9,000 # of grain (corn, wheat, soybeans, ect) is that it's much heavier than 9,000# of cotton.....Have had this discussion with numerous other farmers and never had one to disagree. Old iron falls into the 'lead' category rather than feathers.....Certainly no expert on trailers/hauling, but I do have 40 plus years experience dragging stuff around with tractors and farm trucks..... didn't mean to offer unsolicited advice, just rambling on..... .

Hi Thurlow,

Thanks but I didn't mean for you too run out and measure it pronto. I always enjoy hearing about others ideas as I'm sure others do also.

I was currious if the design stayed with-in my 2/3 rule and it's close, 73%. I find alot of the 5th wheel and GN trailers using 70% to 75%. That would make them pull best.

On my tag tri-axle I'm changing it too a reverse GN and was planning a 70% length. The trailer was used when I bought it and I didn't see any excessive tire scrub.

I did a pull of a 14x75ft mobil home for 800miles one time and that was your pound of lead to pound of feather feeling for sure. Colorado used a 12ft roadway from center line to edge of pavement and hearing the snow reflectors hit the side of the MH was hard to get used too. Then it was alittle unnerving climbing two lane grades.

On one grade a 6%, I sent my pilot car ahead to block traffic on top of the pass so I could use both lanes for the corners. I gave him specific instructions to use his vechile accross both lanes to stop traffic.

He didn't think that was required so I'm doing a tight right hand corner and the back of my trailer is 12" from the right gaurd rail and my tractor was in the burm on the left side lane when I looked up and seen a 18 wheeler heading for me. My tractor was just center lane by now so I figured to keep going with my door open as I'm doing about 5mph in doubble lo-gear and thought if he hit my trailer it would be about a 500ft ride down a mountain.

He see's me and hits his trailer brakes and pulls to the shoulder burm but forgets about the rock overhang and trailer sheet metal is flying off in every direction. As he slides past my cab I'm looking in my mirror watching my rear trailer top as he clears it by about 4". He never even stopped and neither did I. Ohhh the good times :)

I agree with F2011, definetly go with a high deck gooseneck trailer, you will be able to load just about anything on this without worrying about whether or not it will fit between the fenders. Also, dont skimp on length, or axle capacity. I have a 20+5ft. with 14,000# axles. If I had it to do over again, I would go at least 5ft. longer on length, and at least 20,000# axles.

I have an 18ft 10000pd pull behind that I haul F20 an H's on but wish now that I would have bought a gooseneck with a flat deck. The WD9's I have won't fit on my pull behind so I'm going to have to upgrade to haul them around. If I were to do it again I thing i'd go right for the gooseneck with a flat deck (wheels under the trailer) so I could haul anything. I don't know about your house or farm but one of my crops seems to be old Iron, they just keep poping up all over the yard :o)

Pull my M on a 16' dual axle with 12000 pd capacity.Got a Reece hitch under the bumper with a weight distibuting hitch.I dont need to haul more than one tractor, butI can get my F-14 and my Cub on there if I need to,but mostly just haul the M.The hitch makes a big difference when I am pulling.
