Hydraulic system problem-(long post)

I'm working on the hydraulics on my Love rowcrop and I've hit a snag. I can't find any hydraulic system diagrams to work with and I can't find another tractor with this type of system. It looks to be a closed-type system, with a Pesco belt-driven pump. There is a 2 qt reservoir that feeds the sytem-thru a 3 position spool valve [push-neutral-open]. The cylinder is a 3 inch bore-4 inch stroke (new). The feed line goes from the spool to the cylinder and the second hose from the cylinder(top) back to the reservoir.
I can push the cylinder out with the pump, but it doesn't want to empty. I'd appreciate any help with this. I can't figure out if I have a vaccuum problem or air blockage.
If I knew the THEORY of the system, it would help,
but I don't have a clue where to look. I tried the sites for aircraft landing gears (where this pump was used) but no help there.
Thanks for any help. pb

Appreciate the response and help. I'll 'chew' on this for a while. Tried to disassemble the spool valve last nite without success. Spool doesn't want to go to third position (exhaust) for some reason ,as it should. May have to replace it.
Already have a small fortune in this restoration, so if it takes a new valve and plumb the exhaust cylinder hose to it, that's what I'll do.
Again, thanks to all. (System diagram is great-
you should put that somewhere indexed.) pb

Hi pb,

by your description the cylinder is plumbed as a single acting cylinder with the line between the ram end and resevouir doing nothing.
recomend that you replumb the line from cylinder to reseviour, to cylinder to valve. this way valve in one position will stroke the cylinder out and return oil on the ram end line to the valve. in other valve position oil will be sent to the cylinder, retracting it and returning oil to the valve from the base hydraulic line good luck

from what you describe you have a single acting cylinder, you need load on the cylinder to push it back.
