From time to time over the years I have seen the spelling of Allis Chalmers butchered i.e. Alex Chambers, Alice Chambers (had a cousin named that), allis chamers, Ottis Chamers. Jus for fun, what and how have you seen this and others spelt.
Gotta go, the wife is waitin in the shivolay. She wants to go look at a foud.

A retired agricultural machinery rep told me a good story. His boss dictated a letter to his (new?)secretary,to be addressed to Allis Chalmers in Essendine, England
She began the letter
"Dear Mrs. Chalmers.....

One name that defeats a lot of Farmers over here, the Norwegian agricultural machinery manufacturer, famed for its top quality ploughs..... Kverneland, it is actually pronounced "K-vern-e-land" but a lot of people think the K is silent like in the word 'knife'. Variations I have heard include 'Verniland', 'Nervyland' and 'Kanerviland'.

I've got a Cockshutt- so don't get me started on mispronunciations. One of my favorites, though, was a wonderful old neighbor we had, who has since passed- he waxed long and eloquently on the virtues of his herd of Santa Lacrudis cattle.

My snow cat has an Allis Chalmers engine in her. My mechanic friend calls her Fat Allis. He said it is something to do with Fiat buying A-C. The name is perfect for her.

Nothing to do with Allis-Chalmers but I heard someone refer to a Massive-Ferguson he was real proud of. I'm not sure if he was talking about a tractor or not.

i find thats its much more fun to make fun of people that don't know how much a cubic foot of water weighs, or don't know how to calculate the deflection of a beam under load. people that don't know how to weld overhead are always fun to make fun of. and the people that call drills, bits, breaks me up. how about the people that don't understand scientific calculators, loads of laughs. then there's the ones that don't know how to make voltage drop calculations of runs of wires. one of my pet peeves is people that don't know the difference between open centered, closed centered, and power beyond hydraulic valves. and don't get me started on the ones that think there was a naval battle between a ship called the merrmack and monitor.

the spelling challenged ps. the only person making lower grades than me in spelling, in my school is another engineer. both of us thought we were getting into a field that would forgive our weaknesses. their, i fel bitter alredy.

62.4 lbs/gal. your diatribe reminds me of a story. A women is talking to her doctor about her son and the fact that he takes every thing (EVERYTHING) apart looks at it and puts it back together. After further discussion the doctor informs her that her son has the "KNACK" which he characterized as a "socialy inept individual with the uncanny ability to understand all things electrical and mechanical. The women asks "is there a chance he will lead a normal life?" to which the doctor replies "I am afraid not-He is destined to be an engineer!"

as a kid (and now alot of times) the problem i had was in not having the ability to put things back together agian. the spelling really bugs me. its like a big void (read that empty space) in my brain dealing with spelling.

Is it Merrimac versus CSS Virginia that you object to, or is it that Portsmouth / Hampton Roads is not exactly open sea?

There was never a CSS ship named merrimac. i know its a detail, but its incorrect. from what i've read about both ships, you would have to be pretty brave to be on either in calm water. much less open seas.
