I'm doing a rebuild on a Zenith carb. The main jet is pitted. Is it possible to buy new main jet assemblies for Zenith updrafts?

When you say the main jet, are you referring to the big fuel nozzle (brass) that sticks up at an angle? If so, yes I've seen them in some kits. There is a good article on rebuilding carbs in the "articles" section in the left menu here at YT. If you go to remove the old nozzle, make sure you heat things up good with a plumbers propane torch or even in a barbeque oven or you will twist the old one off in the casting. The heating thing should only be done if the casting is cast iron ... I'm not sure if a pot metal casting would be OK with that method.

My carb. is blowing gas out of 2 holes, just before the gas gets into the carburetor, can you help me understand what is going on?

That "end" you refer to would be the threaded ends of the fuel nozzle right? There is a thread at the very end, then just plain brass, then some more threads? Some tiny little holes are drilled through the brass pipe between the threads and then again above the second set of threads? Somehow I think you should be OK ... maybe coat the threads with some of that coppercoat anti-seize before reinstalling.

That 'end' is the needle part of the main jet adjustment assembly, that's what these instructions say anyway... The side is eroded with some heavy corrosion. I buffed on it some with a nylon pot scrubber, no emory or sandpaper though.

All the other parts showed bad wear. The throttle shaft only had one of the 2 rubber seals left.
The pin that the float lever arm is fastened to was badly scored. The screws that held the body of the carb together looked like someone had used a dull knife blade or can opener on them. I filed off the burrs.
The main jet piece has a bad gouge where someone had tried to loosen it with a mismatched screwdriver. The plug that covers the main jet looked like a pair of channelocks where used on it. I got that filed down and it can be removed with a socket now. The venturi looked like an icepick had been poked into it. That took the longest to get looking right. All in all the carb was needing a redo many moons ago. When I bought the tractor the guy said he had just rebuilt the carb. Man, I hope he is just a bad liar and not a mechanic... whew, what a mess.

I think that needle you refer to is the "high speed jet" if I'm not mistaken. Yes, some of that old stuff has really been butchered. Let us know how you make out when things are back together and hopefully running.

You betcha. I hope to have some good news to share. I did read those earlier posts before I statred the rebuild. I had my torch and oven mittens on the bench as I started. That PB Blaster stuff worked like a charm. I thought I would try to loosen the 4 screws that hold the thing together first. They came out very easily.

Do you know if I can buy that needle valve assembly (high speed jet) anywhere if I need it?

Can't remember seeing those in any kit. Your best bet is to keep your eyes open for an old carb(s) at swap meets, etc. and then buy it. Sometimes you can get a pail of them for $10 (which I've regretably passed on once).
