Hydraulic trouble

I just bought a Ford 850 with a "Lord" loader and "Sherman" Power digger. The hydraulics seemed to work fine (with the exception of the loader leaking down). After using the hoe for ten minutes the crank mounted pump started to squeal and nothing moved when trying to move any of the hydraulics. The hydraulic fluid is kind of "milky".
Could this problem be the pump?
Could it be hydraulic fluid quanity or quality?
Does hydraulic fluid ever just need to be replaced?
What are my replacement options?

Thanks ...Ron

Milky hydraulic fluid indicates water in the oil. Drain and refill with the proper oil. Sqealing usually indicates a starved pump= plugged/restricted filter.

Thanks for your help.
I can see this is going to be one of those "learn on the job" things. Seeing as this tractors needs alot, there's an chance I might learn something.

HY-TRAN or good equivalent suspends water, but does not dry it up. You would have to change the fluid to get rid of it.

My dad has as Sherman 54c100 with the same water problem. What is the best place to drain and where can we find the filter. The Hydraulics work, but are very slow, so I think we have a partial clog/restriction in addition to some water.

Also, anyone know where we can get a Powerdigger manual?

Is fluid milky after it has been setting overnight? You may have a pickup screen partly blocked and or air is being sucked in on the main feeder line going to the pump causing fluid to foam.

Yes, the fluid remains "milky" overnight.
Not knowing much about these things, I would imagine the pickup screen/filter is located at the reservoir, not at the pump. Thanks for your help.

could the keyway on the shaft to pump be sheared off I would check that first if it is a front mount pump the key can shear off

After the tractor set for a while it worked okay. Someone told me that if the hydraulic fluid temperature got hot enough the suspended water in the fluid would go to steam and "starve" the pump, causing the squeal. The other possibility could be a clogged filter in the fluid resevour.

thanx Ron
