We drained an old pond/lake on some of our property and lo and behold there sat at the bottom an old jd on steel. The pond was dug around 1915 by hand and is about 18 foot deep. It was buried in mud to the flywheel and had no ledgable markings. The frame and styling gave the make away. We were blown away to say the least. We are still trying to find out exactly how it got there. It seemed to be complete when it went swimming.

Maybe the farmer was fishin' for catfish and had a trot line attached to the tractor. Look for the possible remains of a Flathead catfish on the bottom of the pond. The "CAT" mighta been a big one and pulled the tractor into the pond when he got hooked. Those due's are STRONG!

Any signs of human remains? Shoes, clothes, jewellery, teeth, tobacco pipe, lighter etc?

It wouldn't be unlikely that some previous tennant at the farm disposed of it, and declared it stolen to collect the insurance, especially after they'd had enough of the flywheel start. john Ne.

only other item found was an old boot, some cans and fishing line. There was an old hex head style wrench hooked to the back seat with wire.

The last issue of Antique Power had an article about a dozer in Australia that was removed from the bottom of a pond after many years, engine turned over with a bar. I think the lack of oxeygen on the bottom of a pond, covered with mud almost makes rust impossible. Fill it with oil everywhere possible, even if it is used oil. Hose it off and let it dry. Try to restore it, what a story to have with a running tractor. As someone said, everything is restoreable. It might take a while though, would be a real project.

More likely as not it was stolen. Then the theives got cold feet and decided to "lose" it rather then get caught trying to sell it. Local guy had a horse stolen a few years ago and the theives found out it wasn't so easy to sell with several sale barns on the lookout for it. The idiots shot the animal and left him lay. They forgot that meat STINKS when in spoils, a neighbor of the theif found the body a week later.

Was the pond down a small knoll? Was the JD in neutral? It could have rolled off a hill into the pond and the owner presumed it had been stolen! :^)

we lifted it out with a track hoe that my buddy owns. the steel wheels were actually intact. we kept it suspended out of fear the wheels would collapse under the tractors weight. We hope to block it up in the next few days. Rain has been bad here so we are waiting for it to dry up a little. I thought i would be funny and try to turn the flywheel and it actually turned. I could not believe it. It is not really restorable but it is definately all there.

Now that it is out in the air it will deteriorate very fast, much faster than when it was under water. Get oil on everything quick, especially in the engine.

my nephew got some pics. i will try to get them posted soon. I have found out who owned the land then but no leads on why it was in the pond. There was no implement hooked to it. I figure it was recovered. I will keep investigating.

I remember back in 66 when my first girlfriends brother and hs wife found a WC Allis in a pond. They pulled it out and I believe, fixed it. I do remember e commited suicide later. Maybe getting it fixed was the cause. ha ha. Anyway, Back in the old days, it woulda been dang hard to start a D, say, if the Ice was strong enough to hold one up on it. It would have been much easier, and wiser, considering the difference in weight, just to harness up a team of horses, as everybody kept a team nearly back then, and go out on the ice with them. Money wise, if an accident did happen, the team was a much cheaper loss than the tractor, faster to harness up and use, and if they were a good team, you didnt have to be too close to them to work them. unlike a tractor, where, if it goes down, whoevers driving goes down too. BUT, ya never know

Or a good old fashioned prank..someone was up to mischief or just had a score to settle with the owner...or the John Deere was such a lemon that the owner had had enough...Al

Maybe the tractor was driven out on the ice in the winter, possibly pulling a sled for getting the ice in to fill the ice house? Any evidence that the tractor had been towing anything?

The newspaper article is an excellent idea. Though me thinks, this tractor broke through the ice one winter.

Unussual story. Maybe perhaps the tractor was stolen and the pond was a hiding place. Or perhaps someone drove it in there and couldn't get it out. Ounce those steel wheel's sank in the mud, it would of been really hard to get it out. Would be neat to know how it got there.

You should call your local newspaper and have them run a story on your find, complete with picture. Someone in the area may remember the story of how it got there.

Post a picture here, too!

Could be some hired hand or even a farmers son got miffed at the owner boss/Dad? and decided to get even by taking the tractor for a swim? Knew a kid that used to get out of mowing the lawn by pulling the starting rope out of it's houseing when we were all still kid's so who know's right?
